Meta - the company of billionaire Mark Zuckerberg said, is expanding the fraud information exchange (FIPE) to allow British banks to share data directly with the social media giant, to help detect and remove fraudulent accounts and fraud schemes.

Meta, the company that owns Facebook, is partnering with UK banks to combat social media fraud.

The technology has been tested with several UK lenders, according to Meta. For example, Meta said it took down 20,000 accounts belonging to scammers involved in a concert ticket fraud network targeting people in the UK and US, thanks to data shared by National Westminster Bank Limited (NatWest) and Metro Bank.

NatWest and Metro Bank are the first UK banks to join the fraud information sharing pact, but Meta says more banks will join in the future.

“This work has helped us take action against thousands of accounts run by fraudsters, demonstrating the importance of banks and platforms working together to tackle this growing social problem,” Nathaniel Gleicher, Meta’s head of global fraud, said in a statement released Wednesday.

“We can only control this type of crime if we work together and share information related to fraud. Financial institutions can share information with us, thereby gaining more experience to uncover more fraud globally,” Gleicher added.

Facebook is one of the most active social networks in the world by scammers.

Meta has long received calls from UK banks to do more to stop scammers operating on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

In 2022, Goldman Sachs-backed British digital bank Starling began a boycott of Meta, pulling ads from its platforms over concerns that the company was failing to address fraudulent financial advertising.

Meta applications are often abused by scammers who attempt to scam users out of money through a variety of fraudulent practices.

One of the most common forms of fraud users encounter on Meta's platforms is authorized payment fraud, where criminals use all sorts of tricks to convince users to send them money by impersonating the individual or business providing the service.

Meta has policies in place that prohibit the promotion of financial fraud, such as loan scams and schemes that promise high returns. The company also prohibits ads that promise unrealistic results, or guarantee financial gains.

Vietnam is one of the countries with the highest rate of Facebook users in the world, which means that this platform has become a useful tool for connecting and sharing information, but at the same time it is also a "delicious bait" for bad guys to take advantage of to commit fraud.

Various forms of fraud: From online shopping fraud, lottery fraud, loan fraud, love fraud to more sophisticated forms of fraud such as account hijacking fraud, fraud via fake messages...

High frequency: Facebook scams are becoming more frequent and sophisticated, causing great financial damage to users.

The victims are diverse: Not only the elderly but also young people become victims of these scams.

Difficulty in Catching Criminals: Due to the decentralized nature of social media, catching scammers is difficult.
