Located in the famous That Son region of An Giang, Sam Mountain is about 284m above sea level and has a wild beauty. In 2018, Sam Mountain was one of 37 places in An Giang recognized as a National Tourist Area with a complex of historical and cultural relics, ranked, such as: Ba Chua Xu Temple of Sam Mountain, Tay An Pagoda, Thoai Ngoc Hau Tomb, Hang Pagoda...
Coming to Sam Mountain today, visitors can also admire Buddhist works carved directly into the mountainside.
The 81m high Shakyamuni Buddha statue is located on a 5,500m2 plot of land, with an investment cost of about 255 billion VND.
The cost of building the Buddha statue was taken from the capital of Ba Chua Xu Temple in Sam Mountain and called for contributions from sponsors, organizations and individuals at home and abroad.
Upon completion, this will be the world's tallest "meditating Buddha carved into a cliff." Currently, the world's tallest Buddha carved into a cliff is 71m in Leshan, Sichuan, China.
The cliff was previously a quarry, so the Buddha statue will beautify the landscape and develop tourism. The Buddha statue is expected to be completed in 2025.
The upper body of the Buddha statue has been completed, but the legs and lotus throne are still being sculpted to completion.
The 81m high meditating Buddha statue, carved into the cliff of Sam Mountain, is the main project of Sam Mountain Cultural Park. When completed, Sam Mountain Cultural Park promises to be an attractive spiritual tourist destination of Chau Doc city in particular and An Giang province in general.
