Canada investigates cause of Titan submersible explosion

On June 25, Canadian authorities opened an investigation into the tragedy of the Titan submersible exploding while exploring the wreck of the Titanic at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.

Speaking to reporters in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, the chairwoman of the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) of Canada, Ms. Kathy Fox, said that the investigation is to find out what happened and why, and to find solutions to reduce the risk of such incidents happening again in the future. According to Ms. K. Fox, this comprehensive investigation process could last from 18 months to 2 years. TSB will share the information they collect with other agencies, such as the US National Transportation Safety Board and the US Coast Guard, within the scope of Canadian law.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police has now announced that it has begun assessing the circumstances leading up to the Titan accident to determine whether a full investigation is warranted. The US National Transportation Safety Board has previously said that the primary responsibility for the investigation lies with the US Coast Guard, which will provide assistance.
