Sharing about the catastrophic landslide in Lang Nu on September 10, due to the impact of storm No. 3 (Yagi), the patient's relatives said that the child was found about 500 meters from the landslide and was quickly transferred to Lao Cai General Hospital for emergency treatment. When B. was pulled out of the mud and water, he had a broken leg and a torn scalp. Not only was he in pain from the injuries, he was also very frightened.

At Lao Cai General Hospital, doctors determined that patient B. suffered from serious multiple injuries, and consulted remotely with leading doctors at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital. The patient was then transferred to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital for treatment.

Multiple organ trauma, toxic infection

Patient B. was transferred to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital for treatment in the Pediatrics Department, in serious condition due to kidney, liver, and adrenal gland injuries. He had a broken femur, which was set in Lao Cai province.

The head of the Pediatrics Department said that along with the injuries, the child had open wounds on the skull and face. In particular, the most serious skull wound was infected. According to the results of bacterial culture at Lao Cai General Hospital, the child had a staphylococcal infection.

All patients in flood-affected areas are reported to have a private consultation with the hospital director, as in the case of child B. And the doctors assessed that the child's open wound needed to be covered.

At Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, Hospital Director Duong Duc Hung assigned the Pediatrics Department treating patient Hoang Gia B. to clean the wound as soon as possible, because the open wound on the head was infected with a life-threatening bacteria.

The hospital urgently held an interdisciplinary and inter-hospital consultation, inviting doctors from the Central Eye Hospital, because the X-ray showed that the child had an eye socket defect.

After consultation, the doctors assessed that the eyes would not need any intervention, the eyelids were drooping but the vision was still good. The wounds on the thigh and abdomen did not require intervention.

“With the injury to the brain and head and face, after consultation, the doctors decided to perform surgery immediately. The surgery lasted 5 hours, in the pediatric operating room, with the best conditions of the hospital,” said the head of the Pediatrics Department, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital.

During the surgery, the doctors discovered a lot of mud and pus in the child's eye socket. The doctors cleaned it out.

With the head wound, the doctors covered the child's skin as much as possible, not leaving it exposed, because leaving it exposed would cause infection. In addition, the wound behind the ear, on the ear cartilage of child B. was also infected, so the doctors cut and cleaned the wound.

Health and psychology gradually stabilize

Talking to Thanh Nien , Dr. Duong Duc Hung, Director of Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, shared that more than 10 days after surgery, with active treatment, with the attention of doctors, nurses, health care, spirit, health and psychological condition of the child is now stable.

“When he was admitted, he was in a serious condition and in a state of panic. But in recent days, he has been communicating more openly and smiling when receiving attention,” said a doctor.

The leader of Viet Duc Friendship Hospital said that 100% of the treatment costs for child B. will be waived, and the hospital will also provide some support for the child's relatives.

According to the Department of Pediatrics, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, patient Hoang Gia B. is now able to play, talk, and is alert. The post-operative wounds are stable. The missing skin flap is being monitored. The patient has no fever and is eating. Doctors predict and hope that the wounds will gradually heal, and he will be healthy enough to be discharged from the hospital in the near future.
