On the afternoon of October 30, Mr. Le Trong Tuong - Chairman of the People's Committee of Huong Son Commune (Huong Hoa District, Quang Tri) - said that the two villages of Cat and Tria of this commune are still isolated and cut off due to flood water and landslides.

Mr. Tuong said that the two villages have quite large rice fields, and there is no shortage of food for now, but being separated causes many difficulties for people in trading and daily life.

“It is difficult to predict how long the separation will last. The commune is proposing that the district have the means to open the route to the people soon,” said Mr. Tuong.

Village chief and villagers carried motorbikes across the flood to seek help because two villages were isolated.

Because the village was isolated, that morning, Cat village chief Ho Van Tinh and some villagers had to risk their lives crossing floodwaters to go outside to ask for help and report information about the village situation.

Accordingly, the road from Cat and Tri villages to km27 of National Highway 9 has many landslides but can still be crossed by motorbike. However, the spillways and landslides that have cut the road since 2020 are deeply submerged in floodwater. At these points, the flood-crossing group had to use sticks to carry motorbikes through the fast-flowing water, which was knee-deep.

Village chief Ho Van Tinh's group had to pass through 4-5 such rapids. After that, Mr. Tinh rode his motorbike near Highway 9 to get a phone signal to send pictures and information to the Huong Son Commune Disaster Prevention Committee.

“The two villages of Cat and Tria are isolated, the roads are severely damaged. There is no phone signal either. Landslides have blocked the roads and telecommunication cables, so people are facing a lot of difficulties now,” informed village chief Ho Van Tinh.

Mr. Tinh went out to report to the commune to take measures and at the same time buy food and necessities to supply the people.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Sam, principal of Huong Son Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, said that some teachers took advantage of the rain to wade through floodwaters to teach on October 29. However, on the morning of October 30, some subject teachers were still unable to enter the village.

“When we come to teach, we have to help each other push and carry carts through the floodwaters. We have food reserves for about a week, if we run out, we have to borrow from the locals. We hope to have support from the government to quickly overcome the landslides and isolation, because it will be very difficult for the people to overcome it themselves,” said Mr. Sam.

Mr. Tran Binh Thuan - Chairman of Huong Hoa District People's Committee - said: "It is very difficult to travel to these two villages, the district has assigned the commune to proactively use vehicles and 4 on-site teams to approach and support the people.

In the long term, the government is discussing a plan to build a solid road here.

The flood caused by storm Tra Mi caused more than 2,500 houses in Quang Tri to be flooded, mainly in Vinh Linh district. In addition, there were some other damages to traffic, agriculture, riverbank erosion, etc.
