On June 21, Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital announced that it had successfully operated on a malignant ovarian tumor measuring over 24cm in size for a 15-year-old girl. According to doctors, this is an age where very few people think of having this disease.
The patient is PTN (15 years old, living in Bac Ninh province). The patient's mother said that a few months ago, her child complained of stomach pain, and when she observed, she also saw that her child's stomach was getting bigger.
The family thought that the child had gained weight due to over-nutrition. Recently, the child's belly had gotten bigger, and he still complained of stomach pain, so the family waited until the child finished the 10th grade entrance exam before taking him to the Hanoi Obstetrics Hospital for a check-up.
Doctor Le Thi Anh Dao - head of the A5 gynecological surgery department, Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital - said that ultrasound images showed that the right ovary had a mixed echogenic mass measuring nearly 24cm, with clear boundaries and no pulse signal inside.
MRI results showed a multi-cystic, multi-lobed mass, doctors thought it was a left ovarian teratoma, suspected cancer.
The patient was hospitalized and scheduled for open surgery and frozen section biopsy.
Doctors performed surgery, checked the nature of the tumor was immature, the girl had surgery to remove the adnexa on the side with the tumor. The surgery was successful, removing a large tumor of 24cm.
Doctor Dao shared that fortunately the 15-year-old patient's tumor was of the germ cell type, in the early stage, so the chance of effective treatment was high.
Also on June 20, Hanoi Obstetrics Hospital successfully performed surgery on a 57-year-old female patient with a giant ovarian tumor weighing 7kg.
The patient is Mrs. H. (57 years old, in Dan Phuong, Hanoi), admitted to the hospital with lower abdominal pain and a distended abdomen. Taking a medical history, the patient shared that she had symptoms of lower abdominal pain and a distended abdomen but subjectively did not go for regular health check-ups. Recently, she felt her abdomen was larger and more distended, so she went to the hospital for a check-up.
The patient was examined and tested, the results showed suspicious images of a malignant ovarian tumor.
Doctor Nguyen Duc Phuc, head of the gynecological oncology department, Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, diagnosed a large ovarian tumor, monitored ovarian cancer, and ordered the patient to be hospitalized for surgery to remove the tumor and undergo immediate biopsy and treatment according to the lesion.
Doctors performed surgery to remove the tumor. After surgery, doctors removed an ovarian tumor measuring about 30cm and weighing nearly 7kg for biopsy. The surgery was successful, and the patient was monitored post-operatively at the hospital.
Doctors recommend that when women see symptoms such as bloating, pelvic pain, abnormally large abdomen, digestive disorders, unexplained weight loss, frequent urination, etc., they should go to a medical facility for examination and ovarian cancer screening to avoid the disease progressing and affecting treatment.
