Master - Doctor Dao Thi Anh Vinh, Deputy Head of Obstetrics Department of Thong Nhat General Hospital, said that the patient is Ms. NTKO, 42 years old, residing in Bau Ham commune, unmarried. About 8 years ago, the patient had surgery to remove a large uterine fibroid but did not go for a follow-up examination as instructed by the doctor. On July 9, the patient was hospitalized with abdominal pain, prolonged menstrual bleeding, heavy abdomen, and when touching her abdomen, she felt a very large mass, occupying the entire abdomen up to near the lower ribs.

Through examination, doctors diagnosed the patient with a large uterine fibroid compressing the right, left, and sigmoid colons, compressing the ureters on both sides, with a complicated prognosis.

On the morning of July 11, doctors from 3 departments: Obstetrics, Urology, General Surgery, along with anesthesiologists, performed surgery on the patient. Because the tumor was too large, had intestinal adhesions, and was compressing the ureter, it caused many difficulties during the surgery. For nearly 6 hours, the doctors had to skillfully remove intestinal adhesions, separate the tumor, then cut the tumor weighing nearly 7kg, restore the abdominal wall, and preserve the patient's 2 ovaries. Because the tumor was compressing the right ureter, the patient had a ureteral catheter placed.

Dr. Vinh noted that women should have regular gynecological examinations to detect and treat uterine fibroids early if any. Large uterine fibroids can cause complications, compress the ureter, cause kidney failure, compress the intestines, cause intestinal obstruction, menorrhagia, and even infertility.
