Now, residents and tourists can use a variety of payment methods such as credit cards, debit cards, EMV prepaid cards, e-wallets and smart devices to travel by bus in Ho Chi Minh City. At the same time, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, Mastercard and Sacombank also launched the Sacombank Mastercard MultiPass - an interoperable payment card for public transport vehicles equipped with POS machines.

After a successful trial, the Open loop cashless payment system has been installed on a number of key bus routes and is continuing to be expanded to more than 500 buses in Ho Chi Minh City. This is an important step in modernizing the public transport system, in line with the orientation of building a smart city and following the direction of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee in Official Dispatch No. 2988/UBND-DA dated May 28, 2024.

Ho Chi Minh City is one of the pioneering cities to apply the Open Loop payment system in Vietnam. With this model, passengers can use many different forms of payment, including domestic and international payment cards; e-wallets; and smart payment methods such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. This system not only provides more payment options, but also expands access to public transport for all subjects, especially international tourists, foreigners living and working in Ho Chi Minh City, as well as domestic people who are already familiar with using digital wallets and payment methods.

The implementation of the Open loop payment model not only brings convenience to people but also contributes to the goal of national digital transformation. For society, this model helps reduce traffic congestion, encourages people to use public transport instead of private vehicles, and contributes to environmental protection by reducing emissions and fuel consumption. Furthermore, the socialization of operating costs through the participation of technology partners, banks and payment technology units helps to better serve the community, increase access to the entire population and operational efficiency, while reducing the burden on the state budget, and increasing transparency in public transport management.

Along with the Open loop payment system on buses, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport also launched the MultiGO application - a smart transport platform that integrates necessary utilities in a digital ecosystem.

With MultiGO, users can look up routes, travel times of all public transport and other public transport information; buy public transport tickets on the app; issue Sacombank Mastercard MultiPass cards directly on the app, allowing payment for transportation services and daily utilities right on the app, bringing a modern, convenient and cashless travel experience to people.

Sacombank Mastercard MultiPass card - issued by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, Sacombank and Mastercard is a payment card for public transport with POS machines. The card is designed specifically for people who travel frequently such as students, workers, etc., providing utilities and incentives specifically for transportation to create a habit of using public transport for people such as a flat bus fare of 5,000 VND, a flat metro fare of 10,000 VND, a direct 5% discount when paying for train tickets, etc.
