Mr. Tran Hong Thai, Director General of the Department of Hydrometeorology, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, was appointed by the Prime Minister to hold the position of Deputy Minister of Science and Technology from October 12.
The new Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, 49 years old, is from Can Loc district, Ha Tinh province. Mr. Thai graduated from university in Russia and defended his doctoral thesis in Earth Sciences and Mathematics at Heidelberg University (Germany).

He was a researcher at the Institute of Hydrometeorology, then became the head of the institute, and was transferred to become Deputy General Director of the National Center for Hydrometeorology. When the National Center for Hydrometeorology was transformed into the General Department, Mr. Thai held the position of Deputy General Director.
In April 2018, Mr. Thai was assigned to be in charge of the General Department of Hydrometeorology, and a year later was appointed Director General.
Currently, the Minister of Science and Technology is Mr. Huynh Thanh Dat. The four Deputy Ministers include Messrs. Bui The Duy, Le Xuan Dinh, Nguyen Hoang Giang, and Tran Hong Thai.
