NBC News reported on November 27 that Special Prosecutor Jack Smith's office filed a motion on November 25 to dismiss the prosecution of Donald Trump from June 2023 after FBI agents discovered many classified documents at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. The appeals court approved the request on November 26 (US time).

Smith's office also filed a motion to dismiss the case against Trump over his alleged involvement in overturning the 2020 election results, and Judge Tanya Chutkan in Washington DC granted the request on November 25.

His attorney has not commented on the Florida court's report, and a spokesman for Mr. Smith's office declined to comment.

Federal Judge Aileen Cannon in Florida dismissed the claim that Mr. Trump illegally possessed classified documents in July, arguing that Mr. Smith’s appointment as special counsel was illegal and therefore he lacked the authority to bring the case to trial.

However, federal prosecutors filed a motion in August with the appeals court to restore the trial process.

So far, two of the four criminal charges against Mr. Trump have been dismissed. NBC News reported that in addition to the two cases above, Mr. Trump was also convicted of paying hush money to an adult film star in New York before the 2016 election and another case in the state of Georgia also related to the effort to overturn the 2016 election results.

The sentencing in New York has been postponed indefinitely while the Georgia case is also pending.
