The Sunday Times reported on September 14 that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer violated parliamentary regulations by failing to report that his wife received designer clothes as gifts from a wealthy businessman and Labor Party donor.

Mr Starmer, who took office in July, faces an investigation for "failing to disclose" that donor Waheed Alli paid for clothes for the leader's wife, Victoria Starmer.

Mr Alli, the former chairman of online fashion retailer Asos, has an estimated fortune of £200m and is Mr Starmer's biggest individual donor.

This year, he gave the Labour leader £18,685 worth of work clothes and some glasses. He also spent £20,000 on Mr Starmer’s accommodation during the election and a similar amount on “private office” expenses.

The above gifts were declared, but his wife's clothes were not.

A Downing Street spokesman said in a statement to Reuters that Prime Minister Starmer and his team had sought advice from the government and believed they had complied.

"However, after further questioning this month, we declared additional items," the spokesman said.

Like all MPs, the British Prime Minister has a personal responsibility to disclose his or her relevant interests. Rules are in place to protect politics from undue influence and maintain transparency.

Downing Street has refused to say when Mr Alli started paying for Ms Starmer’s clothes or give a total value of the gifts. A source said the information would be officially disclosed in due course.

A Conservative spokesman has called for a full investigation into "clear and serious breaches of parliamentary rules".

Prime Minister Starmer has an annual salary of £166,786 (5.37 billion VND). His wife is a lawyer who moved to work for the UK's National Health Service with an annual income of £50,000.
