Pepper price today, November 21, 2024 in the domestic market is stable in some key localities, trading from 138,500 - 140,000 VND/kg.

Specifically, pepper price today in Gia Lai is at 139,000 VND/kg.

Pepper prices today in the provinces of Dong Nai (138,500 VND/kg); Dak Lak (140,000 VND/kg); Dak Nong (140,000 VND/kg); Ba Ria - Vung Tau (139,000 VND/kg) and Binh Phuoc (139,000 VND/kg).

Thus, domestic pepper prices today remained stable in most key growing areas, with only a slight increase of VND500/kg recorded in Dak Lak. The highest pepper price was at VND140,000/kg.

In 2014-2015, pepper was considered “black gold” when the price peaked at 250,000 VND/kg. Seeing the big profits, many farmers rushed to buy land and switch to growing pepper.

The consequence is that the process of planting and caring for pepper plants is broken, chemical fertilizers and pesticides are poured into the garden with the desire to grow the fastest and achieve the highest yield.

For example, in Gia Lai, the planned pepper area by 2015 was 6,000 hectares, but by 2017, the pepper area in Gia Lai had reached 18,000 hectares.

It was the hot growth that caused Gia Lai pepper to fall into a "tragedy", with diseases raging everywhere, especially the "quick death, slow death" disease.

From 18,000 hectares, Gia Lai's pepper area decreased by more than half in 2019. Along with the record low pepper price, pepper trees were almost eliminated.

After 10 years, efforts to sustainably develop the pepper industry are being maintained and achieving positive results. After a year of good prices, people did not rush to plant new pepper, but instead focused on increasing productivity using organic methods.

People are also more aware and proactive when participating in the market. Currently, there are not many pure pepper gardens left, instead, they are intercropped with coffee and fruit trees. This also helps the trees complement each other in terms of nutrition and effective pest control.

With systematic and persistent methods bringing about effectiveness in many localities, it brings confidence that Vietnam will continue to be a producing country and hold the world's leading market share in this agricultural product.

There are currently about 200 pepper processing and trading enterprises nationwide, of which 15 are leading enterprises, accounting for 70% of the country's export volume. The entire industry has 14 deep processing factories. Notably, there are 5 foreign-invested enterprises, accounting for nearly 30% of the export market share.

Vietnam's pepper processing technology has reached the standards of the world market in general. Enterprises with high-tech processing factories according to ASTA, ESA, JSSA standards have created diverse products: whole black and white pepper, ground pepper, and small packages.

However, in general, Vietnamese pepper is still mainly exported raw, with a value lower than that of India and Malaysia. If the Vietnamese pepper industry is better organized and processed, the value of exported products will increase, and the price of Vietnamese pepper will be equivalent to and possibly higher than that of some countries in the world.

Therefore, VPSA encourages improving product quality from the planting stage, businesses investing in deep processing, clean processing, diversifying products, diversifying markets to penetrate deeply into the global pepper supply chain.
