On June 8, the fishermen were still being cared for by the Con Dao Border Guard Station and the Ba Ria - Vung Tau Provincial Border Guard, providing them with food and accommodation, and taking their statements to clarify the incident.

Previously, on June 5, a boat captained by Mr. Dang Van Teo (46 years old) carrying 5 people left Vung Tau City port to Con Dao sea to fish for squid. At about 2am yesterday, while fishing 40 nautical miles east of Con Dao, the boat was hit by a cargo ship with an unknown registration number, which then fled. The captain turned on the identification device to identify the ship that caused the accident, but could not remember exactly.

The fishermen jumped into the sea before the boat sank. They tried to swim close together to avoid getting lost for more than 5 hours, and were discovered and rescued by a fishing boat from Tien Giang province that morning. The fishermen were transferred to another boat to go to Con Dao.
