As a locality with a large livestock herd in the province with more than 30,000 pigs, 8,000 cows and 4,000 buffaloes, since the beginning of the dry season, livestock farmers in Vu Quang have proactively covered and cooled their barns, not grazing during peak heat... to limit economic losses and the risk of disease outbreaks in livestock.

At Vu Son Duc Ecological Agriculture and Service Cooperative in Huong Giang village (Duc Huong commune), heat protection and disease prevention for a herd of 1,200 pigs (800 sows, 400 piglets) is always the cooperative's top priority.
Mr. Nguyen Khac Trieu - representative of the cooperative shared: "In the summer, especially on days with high temperatures, cooling the pigs is very important. Therefore, we have maximized the fan system, combined with cooling mist spraying to cool down the barn, creating a well-ventilated environment. In addition, the nutritional regimen has also been adjusted, supplementing vitamins and electrolytes in drinking water and easily digestible food, to enhance the resistance of the pigs. Cleaning, disinfecting barns, and vaccinating are also fully implemented. Thanks to the synchronous implementation of solutions, the cooperative's pigs are always healthy and less affected by the heat."

Paying attention to livestock care during the dry season not only helps people stabilize their income but also contributes to preventing disease outbreaks.
Not only Vu Quang, in Huong Khe district, people also pay special attention to solutions to prevent heat and care for livestock during hot days. Mr. Nguyen Van Toan (Ngoc Boi village, Huong Trach commune) said: "From the beginning of April, I proactively stored green food for my family's 5 cows, while increasing nutrition, ensuring a balanced diet to improve their resistance. In addition, I minimize grazing and letting cows work under the hot sun, especially between 10am and 3pm. Instead, I bring cows to shady places to avoid the sun. The barns are also reinforced to create ventilation and reduce heat absorption this summer".

Proactive response to heat is not only happening on large-scale farms but also on small-scale farms, where people are actively taking action, especially when caring for animals that are sensitive to high temperatures such as sika deer.
Having been involved in deer farming for more than 15 years, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen (Bao Thuong village, Quang Diem commune, Huong Son) said: “My family is currently raising 15 deer. When the weather is hot, the high temperature in the barn can easily affect the health of the animals. I often give them clean water and cover the barn with tarpaulin to reduce direct sunlight. The food rations are also supplemented with leaves and fresh grass rich in water and nutrients. Cleaning the barn is focused on to create ventilation, dryness, and prevent pathogens. In addition, the family also regularly exchanges and learns from the commune veterinary staff to apply appropriate heat-resistant and disease-preventing measures, ensuring that the deer herd grows well during the hot season.”

Along with protecting livestock, fruit tree areas are also actively cared for by people, especially in localities with large fruit tree areas such as Huong Son and Vu Quang. According to gardeners, the weather in recent days has been quite hot, so people have proactively implemented drought prevention measures for trees early, especially orange trees, to preserve the yield at the end of the season.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Quoc's family in village 5 (Ham Truong commune) has more than 1 hectare of orange trees. In previous crops, thanks to proper care following technical procedures, the orange trees yielded good yield and quality, bringing in a good income for the family. "With many years of experience, we understand the characteristics of orange trees in the dry season. If water is not added in time, the trees are prone to leaf loss and the fruit dries out, seriously affecting the yield at the end of the season. Entering the dry season this year, the family has repaired the automatic irrigation system, using dry grass, corn husks, and straw to cover the roots, to retain moisture and provide additional organic nutrients when decomposing" - Mr. Quoc shared.
According to gardeners, in addition to watering and keeping the roots moist, people also proactively prune old branches and ineffective diseased branches so that the tree can concentrate nutrients on growing fruit and creating ventilation for the canopy, minimizing places for pests to hide.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Huong Son district, there are currently more than 2,200 hectares of oranges and more than 48,000 deer in the area (accounting for more than 70% of the total deer herd in the country), the number of deer with antlers is over 22,000, mainly concentrated in communes such as Son Giang, Quang Diem, Son Lam, Ham Truong, Son Trung, Son Ninh... These are livestock and crops that bring in large income for the people, so care is always of primary concern to the people and local authorities.
"Entering the hot season, the locality has directed the communes to propagate and guide people to implement measures to prevent heat and increase resistance systematically. Specifically, for crops, cover the roots, invest in irrigation systems; proactively dig ponds to store water if possible; regularly visit the garden to have appropriate care measures. For livestock, it is necessary to pay attention to reducing the temperature, cooling the barns, providing enough clean drinking water and easily digestible food, supplemented with necessary micronutrients for livestock. In addition, it is necessary to fully vaccinate against diseases" - Mr. Do Thanh Tinh, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Huong Son district informed.
In addition to localities with large fruit tree areas and livestock and frequent high temperatures during the dry season, at this time, other localities in the province are also actively guiding people to take care of crops and livestock to preserve productivity and stabilize income in the face of weather challenges.
