Increase opportunities to consume Vietnamese goods in modern distribution systems

Việt NamViệt Nam31/03/2025

MM Mega Market system is expected to continue expanding its retail channel in Vietnam, opening up opportunities for domestic consumption and export to Thailand for Vietnamese goods.

Vietnamese goods account for over 80% at MM Mega Market

During his working trip to Vietnam on March 18, Mr. Umesh Pandey, Representative of Thai Trade Office, had a working session with MM Mega Market Vietnam - a brand retail goods belongs to BJC BIGC Group - one of the largest Thai investors in Vietnam.

BJC BIGC is a leading large-scale multi-industry economic group in Thailand, operating in many fields, from packaging production, consumer products, medical equipment business, and retail. To date, BJC BIGC Group is investing over 1 billion USD in various fields in Vietnam.

In the retail sector, MM Mega Market (MM) is currently one of the largest modern retailers in Vietnam. MM Mega Market Vietnam has expanded to 21 wholesale centers and supermarkets nationwide, along with 6 purchasing and distribution stations, 8 delivery warehouses (B2B), 2 central delivery warehouses, cooperating with hundreds of partner farmers nationwide.

Notably, at MM Mega Market Vietnam's supermarket system, Vietnamese goods account for over 80% at MM Mega Market. MM Mega Market's warehouses also help preserve and consume many of Vietnam's strong products such as agricultural products, pork, vegetables and fruits... contributing to stabilizing the market during difficult times as well as supporting the consumption of local products.

During the working session, Mr. Umesh Pandey visited the booth. Vietnamese goods and Thai products at MM Mega Market An Phu supermarket, Ho Chi Minh City. “We already have a large presence in the retail industry in Vietnam. With a population of nearly 100 million, most of whom are young, Vietnam is a potential market that we want to exploit. Combined with the nearly 70 million people of Thailand, the two countries have a total population of nearly 170 million, accounting for about 25% of the ASEAN population. When the two countries account for nearly a quarter of the region's population, we must definitely take advantage of this opportunity,” said Mr. Pandey.

Mr. Pandey also said that Thai companies are strong in retail, while Vietnamese enterprises are strong in manufacturing in many different fields. “Let’s cooperate, complement each other and develop together. Thai enterprises will continue to expand investment and seek more cooperation opportunities in the Vietnamese market, from wholesale to retail, even in the high-end segment.”

Opportunities for domestic consumption and export of Vietnamese goods

In the retail sector, MM Mega Market is one of Thailand's typical investors in the retail sector. Currently, MM Mega Market is continuing to expand its investment and develop strongly in Vietnam.

In November 2024, MM broke ground on the Mega Market Trade Center project in Da Nang - MM's first trade center in Vietnam with a total investment of nearly 20 million USD, gradually realizing 56 MM distribution centers by 2028 in Vietnam, focusing on hypermarkets and food services. This is not only a place to consume Vietnamese goods but also realizes MM's commitment to exporting Vietnamese goods abroad through the supermarket system.

Currently, Vietnam's exports to Thailand are still quite modest, only half of the value in the opposite direction. To increase the opportunity for Vietnamese goods, especially agricultural products, to access the Thai market more easily in the future, Mr. Umesh Pandey said that Vietnamese goods have many similarities with Thai goods. There are products that the two countries compete with each other, but there are also many products that the two sides can complement each other.

“In terms of agricultural products, we can look at the items that both countries produce, but Thailand is currently lacking. If Vietnam has abundant supply of these products, there is a chance to export more to Thailand,” said Mr. Pandey.

However, Mr. Pandey noted that when exporting or importing any product, especially agricultural products, businesses should not only export in raw or fresh form, because that does not create added value.

“We are ready to cooperate and find ways to help the two countries complement each other. Our goal is not only to export products to the world, but also to bring quality products from other countries to the Thai market, including Vietnam,” Mr. Umesh Pandey emphasized.
