Cambodia Luan Nam, 72 years old, crocodile farm owner in Siem Reap province, was attacked and killed by crocodiles after falling into the cage.

"When he used a stick to chase a crocodile out of its egg-laying cage, the animal grabbed the stick and caused him to fall into the cage," Mey Savry, police chief of Siem Reap commune, in Cambodia's province of the same name, said of the incident that killed Luan Nam on May 26.

"The crocodiles surrounded him and attacked him to death," Savry said, adding that Mr. Nam's body was covered in bite marks. There were about 40 crocodiles in the cage at the time.

According to police, Mr. Nam is also the president of the local Crocodile Breeding Association. His family has repeatedly urged him to stop raising this dangerous animal, but to no avail.

Savry said that in 2019, a two-year-old girl was attacked by a crocodile after wandering into her family’s farm in the same village as Mr. Nam. There are still a number of farms in Siem Reap that raise crocodiles for eggs, skin and meat, as well as for sale.
