By the end of 2024, the province will have 20 wind power plants, 3 solar power plants, 10 hydropower plants and 151 rooftop solar power systems with a total commercial power generation capacity of 1,119.5 MW, an increase of more than 2.5 times compared to 2020, of which renewable energy projects account for the majority of the total power generation capacity in the province.
In addition, there are 11 wind power projects with a capacity of 424 MW, 7 hydropower projects with a total capacity of 93 MW, 1 coal-fired thermal power project with a capacity of 1,320 MW, 2 gas-fired power projects with a total capacity of 1,840 MW that have had their planning and investment policies approved and are under construction.
These results show that Quang Tri province is focusing on developing the renewable energy sector, contributing to the implementation of the goal of net zero emissions by 2050 with the main goals of developing the energy sector in harmony between sub-sectors with synchronous infrastructure and development goals, ensuring fairness in energy transition and national energy security.
Develop renewable energy industry, store and use CO2, promote production of green hydrogen, green ammonia... Strengthen implementation of solutions for energy saving and efficiency and promote the transition to clean energy use in industry, agriculture, services, trade and civil sectors.
Encourage the development of biomass power, electricity produced from garbage and solid waste to utilize agricultural, forestry and wood processing by-products, promote afforestation and environmental treatment, combined with the development of a renewable energy credit market. Encourage the use of electricity produced from clean energy sources; develop unlimited rooftop solar power on office buildings and private homes in the direction of self-production and self-consumption.
Acting Chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee Ha Sy Dong said that the hydrogen industry and hydrogen market (green fuel) are forecasted to develop rapidly after 2025. To anticipate development in this field, the Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee has directed the addition of green fuel development orientation to the provincial planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050; conduct research, determine investment locations and implement investment projects to produce hydrogen and ammonia from renewable energy with a capacity of over 120,000 tons/year.
Currently, Quang Tri province has received a proposal report from O-Door Engineering and Construction Company Limited and its joint venture partner on the establishment of a high-tech Research and Training Center on renewable energy (including green hydrogen) in the locality.
Based on the results of the field survey and search for investment locations, O-Door Engineering and Construction Company Limited and its joint venture partners proposed that Quang Tri province agree in principle to allow the company to prepare an investment proposal for an energy conversion project on a suitable area of land in the Southeast Quang Tri Economic Zone.
The idea of building a high-tech Research and Training Center for renewable energy as well as a plan to train high-quality human resources to manage, operate, maintain and service energy projects inside and outside the province is a new direction, suitable for the current stage of renewable energy development. Therefore, Quang Tri province will create the best conditions for the project to be implemented soon, in accordance with the location, conditions, planning and scientific and practical bases of the coastal area of Quang Tri province.
It must be affirmed that the development of renewable energy sources in recent years has created jobs for people, improved livelihoods and made important contributions to local budgets. However, the rapid development of renewable energy projects and the huge capacity of renewable energy power plants connected to the regional grid have led to the risk of increased transmission capacity on the grid, causing overload of the regional grid system, and potential transmission grid incidents, posing significant challenges in ensuring safe and stable operation of the power system for the electricity industry.
Therefore, upgrading and building infrastructure for production, transmission, storage, distribution and operation of electricity with the ability to integrate large-scale renewable energy sources is an urgent requirement. Therefore, the Quang Tri 500 kV Transformer Station Project and the Quang Tri - Vung Ang - Da Nang connecting road are important and urgent projects, increasing the release of renewable energy capacity in Quang Tri province in particular and other localities to transmit to the national grid with an increased capacity of about 900 MVA.
Therefore, after the 500 kV Quang Tri Transformer Station is put into operation, it will contribute to reducing power loss, ensuring power supply for the region in the coming period as well as having an important meaning in the commercial operation of the national power system. In addition, Quang Tri province has approved the investment policy and approved investors for the projects of Lao Bao 500 kV Transformer Station (Huong Hoa) and the connecting 220 kV line; Quang Tri 2 500 kV Switching Station and the connecting 500 kV lines.
Currently, the geological and topographic survey work has been completed. EVN is resolutely directing consulting units to develop feasibility study reports and specialized reports and agreements so that projects can be implemented soon to release renewable energy sources in the province and actively contribute to the process of new energy conversion and green growth of Quang Tri province.
