On July 7, OpenAI announced the expansion of the availability of GPT-4, the artificial intelligence research company's latest text generation model, through an application programming interface (API).

As of the afternoon of July 6, all existing OpenAI API developers “with a history of successful payments” will be able to access GPT-4, according to the announcement. The company plans to open access to new developers by the end of July, and then begin increasing the available limit depending on computer availability.

GPT-4 is the latest version of OpenAI's language model, released in March 2023. The previous version, GPT 3.5, supported ChatGPT when it was released in November 2022. GPT-4 can generate text as well as accept text and image input into the model. GPT-4 is trained using publicly available data, including from public websites, as well as data that OpenAI has licensed.
