Complex developments, rapid spread
At present, pests and diseases have appeared and tend to spread on the summer-autumn rice in the flowering stage of Quan Thanh commune. The whole commune has more than 50 hectares of rice infected with small leaf rollers, some areas are severely affected. In addition, various types of planthoppers, stem borers, brown leaf blight, bacterial leaf spot and bacterial stripe disease have also appeared, causing local damage.
“This is an important time, greatly determining rice productivity; however, it is very worrying that in the current hot and humid weather conditions, the above subjects are at risk of spreading rapidly,” said Mr. Cao Xuan Toan - Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee.

Her family has 3 fields of rice. These days, Mrs. Tran Thi Hai in Quang Chau commune often visits the fields.
“Since the beginning of the season, brown planthoppers and white-backed planthoppers have appeared sporadically in the fields, and are now developing more strongly. My rice fields have not been sprayed with pesticides, so I visit the fields every day so that if I detect a high density of planthoppers, I can spray them promptly,” said Ms. Hai.

In Quang Chau commune, the summer-autumn rice has basically bloomed, and the early rice crop in Dien Thai and Dien Dong communes will begin to be harvested around August 25. However, in the fields, many fields have been burned white and dried out under the hot sun.
According to Ms. Dinh Thi Trang - Head of the Economic Department of Quang Chau Commune: The most worrying thing now is the small leaf roller. Although there was a recommendation to spray the 4th generation of leaf rollers from July 13 to 17 and then spray additional chemicals afterwards, some areas were subjective and did not spray or sprayed chemicals with short-term effects, did not spray a second time, so they could not control the crop after the overlap; leading to nearly 20 hectares of rice being severely damaged by the 4th generation of leaf rollers.
In addition, this year, stem borers are scattered, not widespread, so it is difficult to prevent them in a concentrated manner. Especially after storm No. 3, bacterial leaf blight spread and developed strongly, some areas were severely burned; brown spot disease appeared in most of the rice fields.

Do not be subjective or negligent in the face of pests and diseases.
According to the Department of Agriculture , pests and diseases are evolving in a complicated manner, with the risk of outbreak and spread if not controlled promptly.
Since the beginning of August, in many localities such as Dong Thanh, Hop Minh, Quang Chau, Hung Nguyen Nam, Kim Lien, Hoa Quan..., on summer-autumn rice from the panicle initiation to milk stage, brown planthoppers and white-backed planthoppers have appeared and caused quite common damage. In some areas, although they have been prevented, planthoppers continue to cause damage.
The reason, according to Mr. Trinh Thach Lam - Head of the Cultivation Department - Provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, is that the amount of sprayed pesticide is too low (under 20 liters/ 500m2 ), the use of non-specific pesticides, and only contact spraying on the rice area before flowering, so the planthopper eggs continue to hatch.

Up to now, the bearded planthopper and white-backed planthopper have caused widespread damage in many regions, with a total infected area of over 860 hectares. This is a very dangerous target in the summer-autumn crop. If not controlled, it will break out into a "planthopper fire" epidemic, causing severe damage to rice productivity.
In addition, the whole province still has 600 hectares infected with small leaf rollers (5th generation), concentrated in the communes of Nghia Hung, Nghia Hong, Nghia Lam, Nghia Tho, wards of Quynh Mai, Tan Mai, Vinh Loc, Cua Lo...
Worryingly, larvae of the 1st-2nd instars of the 6th generation are expected to emerge from August 10-20 and are likely to develop at high densities on summer-autumn rice areas from the tillering to flowering stages. Bacterial leaf blight and stripe disease have also occurred, causing serious damage to more than 920 hectares of rice varieties TBR 225, Bac Thom No. 7, Thai Xuyen 111... In particular, more than 5,000 hectares of summer-autumn rice have been infected with sheath blight, of which nearly 500 hectares are severely infected.
