US-South Korea prepare for August-long drills in California desert

On July 5, South Korean officials said that to enhance their ability to coordinate operations, the South Korean and US militaries will conduct a month-long joint exercise in the California desert.

It is expected that from August 2-31, about 150 South Korean soldiers will participate in the exercise at the US National Training Center (NTC) in the Mojave Desert, California.

According to the source, the two forces will begin the exercise with terrain reconnaissance and tactical discussions, before conducting offensive and defensive operations for 10 days.

In addition, this exercise will also include battlefield shooting training.

Since 2014, the South Korean armed forces have mobilized about 90-150 special forces soldiers for regular combined exercises at the NTC.

This will be the first time Seoul has sent a company-level mechanized infantry unit to participate in the exercise.

Seeing this as a good opportunity to enhance joint combat capabilities, the South Korean military also hopes that the exercises will train troops in the combat skills of small combined units.
