Chery Group brought a series of models to the 2025 Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS). The most notable of these is probably the new Jaecoo J5 EV 2025 electric car . This compact SUV was announced in October 2024, but the electric version is completely new. |
The electric Jaecoo J5 EV is expected to retain the same dimensions as the internal combustion engine version. If so, the car will have dimensions of length x width x height of 4,380 x 1,860 x 1,650 mm and a wheelbase of 2,620 mm. With these dimensions, the car is positioned in the B-size SUV segment. |
The Jaecoo J5 EV has a significantly different appearance compared to the internal combustion engine version, at least at the front of the car. Here, the characteristic waterfall grille of the Jaecoo car has disappeared, replaced by a transparent strip with the word "Jaecoo", connecting with the slim rectangular headlights, creating a minimalist but modern look. |
Below, this electric SUV has a large rectangular air intake with perforated panels, painted the same color as the body, combined with a simple small air intake. It can be seen that the new change compared to the current trend of increasingly aggressive car design through Jaecoo J5 EV. |
However, the Jaecoo J5 EV still has an overall design similar to the luxury SUV Range Rover Evoque with a clamshell hood, simple side creases, horizontal LED taillights, large rear spoiler and black diffuser. |
Unlike other Jaecoo models, the J5 EV uses traditional door handles instead of the type hidden in the body. The A-pillars are not painted black, helping the car not look too much like Land Rover SUVs. B |
Inside the Jaecoo J5 EV is a minimalist interior with a waterfall-style dashboard, integrated with a 13.2-inch vertical infotainment screen and a steering wheel shared with its sibling, the Omoda C9. The car has very few physical buttons, only 3 buttons to control driving mode, warning lights and door locks. |
This frees up space in the center console, allowing Chery to fit two smartphone chargers, two cup holders, and an open storage compartment underneath. Jaecoo markets the J5 EV as a “pet-friendly” SUV. |
To do this, the car is equipped with an extended seat for more comfort for pets, a powerful air filter to catch pet hair, a smart air conditioning system and antibacterial equipment to limit the growth of bacteria. The company will also provide accessories such as feeding equipment and steps for small pets. |
In addition, the J5 EV is also designed to suit outdoor activities with a towing capacity of up to 1,250 kg, a roof rack with a load capacity of 75 kg, a charging port, luggage hooks in the trunk and a multi-function camping light. The car's 1.45 m² panoramic sunroof is claimed to be the largest in the segment. |
Interestingly, the Jaecoo J5 EV has a completely different powertrain than its predecessor, the J6. While the J6 has the option of rear-wheel or 4-wheel drive, the J5 EV only uses front-wheel drive. The car is equipped with an electric motor with a maximum capacity of 211 horsepower (155 kW) and a maximum torque of 288 Nm, allowing acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 7.7 seconds. |
Although it is a smaller model and has a lower battery capacity than the J6, only stopping at 60.9 kWh, the Jaecoo J5 EV has an operating range of 470 km according to NEDC standards, far exceeding the 426 km of its predecessor. |
According to the more realistic WLTP standard, the J5 EV's operating range can reach about 400 km, while the rear-wheel drive J6 only reaches 371 km. The Jaecoo J5 EV is expected to use a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery called Blade from BYD. Currently, the selling date and price of the Jaecoo J5 EV 2025 in the Thai market have not been announced. |
All we know is that the car will be launched in the Malaysian market in the fourth quarter of this year or early 2026. It will most likely be assembled at the factory in Shah Alam, Malaysia, along with other Jaecoo models to enjoy tax incentives in the next few years. In addition to Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia, the Jaecoo J5 EV may also be sold in Vietnam. |
