Free English teaching model for ethnic minority students in Ta Mung

Việt NamViệt Nam28/11/2024

Recently, the Board of Directors of Ta Mung Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, Ta Mung Commune (Than Uyen, Lai Chau ) connected with a number of teachers who volunteered to teach English online for free to the school's students using online methods.

Every week, on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, 70 boarding students in grades 3 and 4 gather to study English online. The class, taught directly by Mr. Craig Tran and Ms. Mai Van, has created an atmosphere of eagerness to learn. In particular, through this class, students are able to practice correct pronunciation using the Cardlish cards, given by Mr. Craig Tran.

Mr. Phan Trac Huong, Principal of Ta Mung Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, said: “Because it is located in a remote area, learning foreign languages for ethnic minority students still faces many difficulties. The school has found a way to connect with Mr. Craig Tran, asking him to support opening an extra English class 3 evenings/week. At first, students were still confused and hesitant, but the teachers always created a comfortable space to help students overcome their hesitation and become more confident in online learning.”

For ethnic minority students here, due to difficult conditions, they do not have personal devices such as computers or smartphones, so learning is mainly through computers and screens provided by the school. However, Mr. Craig Tran has integrated, both chatting happily and reviewing knowledge from previous lessons. The students all remember vocabulary and pronunciation quite well.

Ms. Cu Thi Xua, a parent whose child is studying in a boarding class at Ta Mung Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, shared: “My daughter is in grade 4. After finishing her English lessons at school, she also watches TV at home and is confident when practicing speaking English, so my family is very happy.”

Currently, Mr. Craig Tran's online English teaching model for ethnic minority students is not only limited to Ta Mung Primary Boarding School, but also has 3 other schools participating in this program.

In December 2022, the Prime Minister issued Decision 1477/QD-TTg approving the Program "Supporting the improvement of foreign language proficiency and international integration for Vietnamese youth in the period 2022 - 2030". In the Decision, the Prime Minister assigned the Ministry of Home Affairs to research and develop mechanisms, policies and programs to promptly encourage, motivate and create conditions for Vietnamese youth, with priority given to youth in rural and disadvantaged areas, in the process of international integration.
