In the first 9 months of the year, which markets did Vietnam export petroleum to? Which markets imported the most petroleum from Vietnam in 2023?

According to data from the General Department of Customs, in January 2024, Vietnam exported goods to Laos worth 56.8 million USD, an increase of 104% compared to the result of 27.8 million USD recorded in the same period in 2023.

In ASEAN, Laos is the 7th largest goods export market, ahead of Myanmar with 31.5 million USD and Brunei with 1.3 million USD.

Petroleum is the item that Vietnam exported the most to Laos in January 2024 with 11.5 million USD.

In the first month of 2024, Vietnam exported 18 main items to Laos. Notably, Vietnam only recorded a decrease in value of 3 of these items compared to the same period in 2023. Including, vegetables and fruits decreased by 36.5%, fertilizer decreased by 28% and textiles decreased by 11.4%.

In contrast, Vietnam had 15 items with positive growth in turnover compared to the same period, of which 8 items grew by 3 digits. Specifically, electric wires and cables recorded an increase of 445%, the item with the highest growth rate. Following were chemical products with +407%; wood and wood products +362%, petroleum +275%, base metals +233%, iron products +178%, coffee +150% and means of transport and spare parts +118%.

Vietnam has 9 items with a turnover of millions of USD with a total of 33.04 million USD, accounting for 59% of the export turnover of goods to Laos. Petroleum is the item with the largest turnover with 11.5 million USD. The export volume of petroleum in the month to Laos reached 14,277 tons, the highest export volume from January 2023 to January 2024.

Following petroleum are iron and steel products with 5.44 million USD; means of transport and spare parts reached 4.3 million USD; machinery, equipment, tools and other spare parts reached 3.26 million USD; iron and steel of all kinds reached 2.98 million USD.

Next are ceramic products reaching 1.82 million USD; plastic products reaching 1.43 million USD; vegetables and fruits reaching 1.23 million USD; paper and paper products reaching 1.03 million USD.
