Before joining the V-League, Huu Thang regularly participated in youth teams from U16 to U22 Vietnam and continuously won individual awards. Showing maturity compared to his peers, Huu Thang played an important role in U21 Viettel and was promoted to the first team from the 2021 season.

Having coached Huu Thang at Viettel's youth team, Coach Thach Bao Khanh highly appreciated his student's ball handling skills, thinking and sharp creative vision. As for Coach Popov, even when he was still leading Thanh Hoa Club, the Bulgarian strategist once said that The Cong Viettel had a "treasure" but had not yet exploited its full potential. In 2023, he connected with Huu Thang and wanted to bring him to Thanh Hoa team but was unsuccessful until the teacher and student reunited as they do now.

If he continues to maintain his high performance, Huu Thang will certainly be noticed by coach Kim Sang-sik when he calls up the Vietnamese team for the FIFA Days series in June 2025.
