LinkedIn sued for using customer information to train AI

Công LuậnCông Luận23/01/2025

(CLO) Microsoft is facing a major lawsuit when the social network LinkedIn, which it owns, is accused of illegally disclosing users' private messages to train AI.

A new class action lawsuit alleges that LinkedIn quietly added a privacy setting to its platform last August that allowed it to share the personal data of Premium users without their consent.

On September 18, LinkedIn quietly changed its privacy policy, paving the way for it to use user data to train AI. The company even confirmed that users who have opted out of sharing their data may still be affected by the changes.

A new class action lawsuit alleges that LinkedIn shared Premium users' personal data without their consent.

The lawsuit alleges that LinkedIn, a social network for businesses and jobs, deliberately concealed its violation of user privacy by quietly updating its policy, suggesting the company was fully aware that it had violated its original promise.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in San Jose, California, alleges that LinkedIn has seriously violated the privacy of millions of Premium users. According to the lawsuit, people who used the InMail feature before September 18 may have been subject to misuse of personal data to train AI.

The lawsuit alleges that LinkedIn violated multiple laws, including California’s contract and unfair competition laws, and seeks $1,000 in damages for each affected user under the Stored Communications Act.

The lawsuit was filed hours after US President Donald Trump announced a massive joint venture between Microsoft, Oracle and SoftBank, with OpenAI joining, that is being formed with the goal of investing $500 billion to build a leading artificial intelligence infrastructure system in the United States.
