In the opening match on the evening of September 11, only having to face the Liechtenstein team with an average elo of 2,072, the coaching staff of the Vietnamese chess team decided not to use the main player Le Quang Liem but gave the opportunity to other players, thanks to which the 15-year-old talent Bang Gia Huy was able to compete in the first Olympiad match of his career.

There were no surprises when Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Le Tuan Minh, Tran Tuan Minh and Bang Gia Huy all won to help the Vietnamese chess team win 4-0 against Liechtenstein. The Vietnamese chess team's opponent in the second game tonight is Bangladesh with an average elo of 2,377.

In the women's team, the Vietnamese team also did not use the main player Pham Le Thao Nguyen but still had an easy 4-0 victory over Tunisia thanks to Vo Thi Kim Phung, Luong Phuong Hanh, Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong, and Le Thanh Tu. The Vietnamese girls' opponent in game 2 was the Republic of Ireland team. The women's team event attracted 183 teams to compete, in which the Vietnamese team was the 20th seed with an average elo of 2,285.
