(PLVN) - The connection between universities and businesses is an inevitable trend for the socio-economic development of every country, aiming to shorten the distance from the classroom to practice.

Parents and students struggle with career orientation

Talking to reporters of the Vietnam Law Newspaper, Nguyen Thuy Linh (3rd year student, Academy of Finance) shared that she chose economics according to the trend of society. Thuy Linh herself is not strong in subjects related to logic and calculation. Initially, Thuy Linh wanted to study Psychology and become a psychologist, but because her family and friends advised her, she chose economics to avoid unemployment after graduation. Thuy Linh's parent, Ms. Thu Hien (living in Tay Ho district, Hanoi) said that her family is mainly civil servants. Wishing her daughter to have a stable job after graduation, she oriented her child to majors that are popular with society.

With a labor market that is increasingly changing due to the influence of socio-economics and science and technology, families with children of school and university age are currently struggling with career orientation. Wishing students to graduate early and have stable jobs and high incomes, most parents choose the trending major for their children.

However, in reality, the number of students choosing the wrong major in Vietnam is quite large. Among them, there are many who used to be good and excellent students but lost their direction at the "threshold" of life. The consequences of choosing the wrong major make students unable to develop their strengths and abilities, but on the contrary, they become self-conscious, bored with studying, leading to declining results. In addition, the lack of career orientation makes many students not have practical experience with the profession, losing the ability to adapt after entering the labor market.

According to previous statistics from the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, each year there are about 200,000 unemployed people of working age. In particular, nearly 60% of graduates work in fields other than their training.

Together we help students with career orientation

To meet the needs of parents and students, job fairs have become an annual activity of universities, supporting students in finding jobs. This is a bridge between businesses and young human resources in the future.

In addition to job fairs, universities are now tending to closely associate with businesses. They train and connect students from the first years of university.

At the workshop entitled “Business model accompanying the training of economic development students at the University of Economics - VNU”, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen An Thinh, Head of the Faculty of Economics, said that although the cooperation between businesses and schools brings many opportunities, for this model to be successful, there needs to be consensus and commitment from both sides. The school needs to be flexible in adjusting the training program to suit the actual needs of businesses. On the contrary, businesses also need to proactively accompany the school throughout, supporting students not only financially, but also in opportunities to learn from experts in the industry.

In fact, to have high-quality human resources to meet the recruitment needs of businesses, students must have access to scientific advances and supplement missing skills.

Ms. Bui Ngoc Ha, Director of Talent Acquisition, Misa Joint Stock Company shared: “The company does not stop at developing technology solutions, but also has a long-term vision in contributing to the development of high-quality human resources. One of MISA’s outstanding efforts is the cooperation program between businesses and educational institutions to equip students with practical knowledge, work experience and future career opportunities…”.
