Suffering from cerebral palsy due to lack of oxygen at birth, Xu Qiming, a student at Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone Foreign Language High School in China, scored 36/42 points at the 2025 IMO. He ranked 12th globally and won the Gold Medal.

Last year, Xi Qiming also won the Gold Medal with 35 points, ranking 5th in the individual competition.

The Chinese Olympic team coach said that Xu Qiming did not receive any special privileges. He took the exam like any other student for two days, four and a half hours each day. This further emphasized his extraordinary willpower and boundless academic spirit.

IMO is the world's most prestigious annual competition for high school students with a passion for mathematics, which began in Romania in 1959. Held from July 10 to 20 in Australia, this year's IMO brought together 630 contestants from 110 countries.

This year, all six Chinese students in the Olympic delegation won gold medals. This impressive achievement further affirms China's strong position in mathematics, and at the same time strongly inspires efforts to overcome adversity.

The next IMO is scheduled to be held in Shanghai, China in 2026. Xu Qiming's story will become an inspiration for Chinese students and the world's mathematics enthusiast community.
