Ha Giang creates great value from planted forests

Ha Giang is a mountainous province with 570 thousand hectares of forestry land, of which more than 81 thousand hectares are planted forests, the rest are natural forests. With large planted forest resources, the locality has recently had many mechanisms and policies to promote the development of the wood processing industry and forest products.

In recent years, Ha Giang province has been interested in calling for and attracting investors to build forest product processing facilities to increase the economic value of planted forests. The locality has implemented many mechanisms and policies to create favorable conditions for investors in forest product processing, specifically approving enterprises to lease land in industrial parks and supporting land rent; supporting transportation costs... In addition, the province is interested in expanding the area of planted forests certified by sustainable forest management (FSC), creating favorable conditions for enterprises to process forest products for export. Up to now, Ha Giang is maintaining nearly 5,000 hectares of forest certified by FSC.

With the province's attention, many businesses and individuals have invested in 200 forest product processing facilities, concentrated in Bac Quang, Vi Xuyen and Quang Binh districts. Forest product processing facilities mainly produce plywood, wood pellets, sawn timber, wood chips, paper and household wooden furniture. Among them, many businesses have invested in building forest product processing factories with modern, synchronous technology and large capacity, attracting and creating jobs for many local workers.

Standing out is the Vi Xuyen Industrial Wood Processing Factory, built on an area of over 10 hectares in Binh Vang Industrial Park, with modern machinery and equipment, a processing capacity of over 30,000 m3 of products per year, the main product being plywood for domestic consumption and export. “We chose Ha Giang to build the factory because it has a large area of planted forests, meeting the raw material source for production. In addition, when implementing the project, the local government has a policy of supporting land rent and transportation costs in the first years. Currently, each year the factory purchases about 20,000 m3 of wood from people; produces about 10,000 m3 of products for domestic consumption and export to Korea and Australia, worth more than 100 billion VND”, said Mr. Nguyen Thanh Xuan, Director of Vi Xuyen Industrial Wood Processing Factory.

The focus on attracting businesses and individuals to invest in forest product processing has created great value from forests. In 2024, the forestry value of Ha Giang province reached 1,666 billion VND, of which processed wood products for export reached more than 474 billion VND. The main export products are plywood, peeled wood, compressed wood pellets and are mainly exported to European countries, America, China and Korea.

Mr. Dao Duy Tuan, Head of the Forest Protection Department of Ha Giang province, said: “The area of planted forests in Ha Giang province has been improved in both productivity and quality, so the value of forest products is very large. People and businesses benefiting from the forest have raised awareness in sustainable forestry development.”

Promoting forest product processing also opens up job opportunities and increases income for people. With nearly 200 forest product processing facilities, jobs and stable incomes have been created for thousands of local workers. People also increase their income from afforestation. Mr. Hoang Xuan Luc, Trung Tam village, Bang Lang commune, has more than 20 hectares of large mixed forests with trees: Gáo, Acacia, Cinnamon, Fat, and Bồ Đề. Mr. Luc's large timber forest is about to be harvested. Mr. Hoang Xuan Luc said: "With more than 20 hectares of planted forest, when harvested, it will bring the family billions of dong in revenue. Planting large timber forests requires less care, thereby increasing income for forest growers after deducting costs. With a stable market and guaranteed output, after harvesting, my family continues to buy forestry seedlings to plant. Only forests can bring large income to farmers in mountainous areas."

In addition to the achieved results, the forest product processing industry still faces many difficulties, especially the road system connecting to transport forest products has not been invested in synchronously; the connection between forest growers and processing facilities is not tight; export products are not diversified; there is no planning for zoning raw materials for large-scale forest product processing facilities, leading to many factories lacking raw materials... Meanwhile, the planted forest area is still fragmented, small, and has not formed concentrated planting areas, making infrastructure investment difficult...

In the coming time, Ha Giang province needs to continue to attract businesses to invest in forest product processing to increase the economic value of forests. Localities develop planted forests associated with the application of scientific and technological advances to increase productivity and output. Along with that, train professional and skilled human resources for the forest product processing industry as well as plan concentrated forest planting areas associated with investment in synchronous infrastructure and expansion of forest areas certified by FSC...

Representatives of wood processing enterprises shared: Ha Giang province needs to remove difficulties for large-scale wood processing enterprises. It is necessary to plan raw material areas and act as a focal point for enterprises to sign contracts with forest growers to ensure raw material sources. When the raw material source is stable, investors will be determined to expand production scale and diversify products.
