DNO - On July 26, the Union of Science and Technology Associations of Da Nang City in collaboration with the University of Education - Da Nang University, the Center for Biodiversity Conservation Green Viet (Green Viet) organized an annual conference on biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in the Central Highlands - Central region with the theme "Marine conservation".

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Chu Hoi, National Assembly Delegate of the 15th tenure, Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Fisheries Association, informed that on June 28, at the closing session of the 7th session, the 15th National Assembly passed a Resolution on the National Marine Spatial Planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050.

Marine spatial planning has the function of resolving conflicts between sectors, levels, and between users and exploiters of resources in marine areas.

Based on resolving current conflicts combined with forecasting the demand for use and exploitation of marine areas in the next 10 years, marine spatial planning has a second function of reallocating spaces and units for development and conservation.

In the sea space reserved for development, development space for 6 economic sectors and reserve areas for other special activities are allocated.

Marine space for conservation is also allocated, striving to have 6% of the country's marine area preserved by 2045.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Chu Hoi also said that the National Marine Spatial Planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, is considered a step to concretize and realize Resolution No. 36-NQ/TW dated October 22, 2018 of the Party Central Committee on the strategy for sustainable development of Vietnam's marine economy to 2030, with a vision to 2045.

At the same time, it should be noted that in the process of implementing marine spatial planning, it is necessary to respect the regulation of the "market" in selecting typical industries and products of each industry and field to exploit and use assigned or licensed marine spatial subdivisions.

Speaking at the workshop, Vice President of the Union of Science and Technology Associations of Da Nang City Nguyen Dinh Phuc said that the workshop is an opportunity for experts, scientists, managers, representatives of domestic and foreign organizations and the community to discuss, propose solutions, and contribute to the conservation and sustainable development of marine biodiversity in the Central coastal region in particular and Vietnam in general.

The work of conserving marine biodiversity in Vietnam in general and in the Central Coast region in particular is still limited and facing many difficulties and challenges. Marine ecosystems are facing many threats and increasing risks from human development activities.

In the Plan for the protection and exploitation of aquatic resources for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, issued by the Prime Minister on May 9, 2024 under Decision No. 389/QD-TTg, the goal is to establish and effectively operate 27 marine protected areas with a total area of ​​463,587 hectares, accounting for about 0.463% of the natural area of ​​the national sea. In addition, there are 149 areas in the sea zone zoned for the protection of aquatic resources.

From that reality, there needs to be appropriate solutions for marine conservation work that is synchronous and effective from policy to practice, meeting the needs and desires of relevant parties to join hands in action, realizing Resolution No. 36-NQ/TW of the Party Central Committee on the strategy for sustainable development of Vietnam's marine economy to 2030, with a vision to 2045; Decision No. 389/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister and Vietnam's important commitments to the international community related to marine conservation, blue and sustainable marine economy.

Associate Professor, Dr. Vo Van Minh, Rector of the University of Education - University of Danang, informed that the workshop will focus on discussing common, directional issues such as: marine spatial planning, marine conservation planning, co-management; experiences and solutions for marine conservation; cooperation in research, training, implementation of projects to support marine conservation and improve livelihoods for the community...

From there, the workshop also focused on discussing policy recommendations to send to relevant ministries, departments, branches and authorities at all levels for reference and application in marine conservation management and planning, marine economic development, etc.
