Lions fight warthog. Video: Latest Sightings
A group of tourists, including Juan Pinto, followed tracks on a dry riverbed and discovered three lions roaming around the Thornybush Game Reserve in South Africa, Latest Sightings reported on May 20. The pride of lions unexpectedly encountered a warthog, which also saw the predators and quickly ran back to its den next to an abandoned termite mound.
When warthogs feel threatened, they retreat into their burrows for shelter and retreat into their burrows. These are underground homes that they dig for themselves. The burrows have small entrances, making it difficult for larger predators to get inside. Warthogs wait until the danger has passed, then come out again.
"The lions chased after it and reached the cave in time to grab the warthog that was crawling down. They grabbed the warthog's head and started a tug-of-war. The three lions tried their best to hold on tight and hoped to pull the huge animal out of the cave," Pinto recounted.
"The battle lasted only a few minutes. The once peaceful and quiet bush became abuzz with the warthog's pitiful cries. Fighting for its life, it tried to escape the lions to burrow deeper into the den and beyond their reach," Pinto added.
Unfortunately for the warthog, the lions had pulled it out. Within seconds, the predators had killed the animal together. The screaming stopped abruptly and the bush quickly returned to its original quiet state, Jinto described.
The African lion ( Panthera leo ) is the only cat species in the world that lives in prides. Male lions protect the territory of the pride while females are the main hunters. Lions are extremely powerful with strong jaws, sharp teeth and a solid body. They can overpower larger prey with their hunting skills. Their prey includes antelopes, zebras, wildebeests and many other animals.
