Four years after launching the first A-series Pixel Buds, Google is back with the Pixel Buds 2A. The new low-cost version of the earbuds costs $129.99.

In return, users get a few notable upgrades like an upgraded chip, Gemini Access, a replaceable battery, and most importantly, active noise cancellation.

The 2A version also adds the A1 Tensor chip, which Google says “unleashes the power of Google’s advanced AI and Gemini features.” Access to Gemini essentially replaces Google Assistant on the earbuds.

For most people, the most exciting feature powered by the new Tensor chip is the active noise cancellation and Transparency mode. Audio has been redesigned—there's also AI-powered background noise and wind reduction for calls.

Google says battery life has been increased to around seven hours with ANC on and 10 hours with it off. The case adds 20 hours of battery life, with a five-minute charge giving you around an hour of playback. The earbuds also have improved IP54 water and sweat resistance, while the case has an IPX4 rating.

Perhaps most interestingly, these earbuds are easier to repair than their predecessors. When testing the case, the insert inside pops out, allowing you to replace the battery when it wears out. This fits in nicely with the Pixel Watch 4, which is also easier to repair than its predecessors.

Inside, the Pixel Buds 2a feature custom 11mm dynamic drivers and a redesigned high-frequency chamber. The sound can be customized via a five-band equalizer in the Pixel Buds app. Overall, the Pixel Buds 2A have the same design as the old Buds Pro 2.

As for call quality, the windscreen and AI algorithms are said to improve clarity. Other features include Spatial Audio support (on Pixel 6 and later), Quick Pair, Multipoint connectivity, Find My Device support, and hands-free Gemini integration. Battery life is rated at seven hours with ANC on, and up to 20 hours with the case.

Alongside the new A-series earbuds, Google is also updating the Pixel Buds Pro 2 with a new Moonstone color and a major software update coming this fall.

The update will add Adaptive Audio, which balances awareness and noise reduction for better use in urban environments, along with Loud Noise Protection to protect your hearing in sudden loud sounds.

The new Gemini Live feature allows for better voice interaction even in noisy environments, and you can now accept or reject calls hands-free with head gestures. The Pixel Buds Pro 2 cost $229 and will be available in the Moonstone colorway starting August 28.
