On November 1, Hue University organized a conference on Hue University - 30 years of re-establishment and development into a national university (1994 - 2024).
Hue University has developed remarkably after 30 years of re-establishment.
At the conference, Associate Professor Dr. Le Anh Phuong - Director of Hue University - said that in 30 years of re-establishment, Hue University has achieved many outstanding achievements, becoming one of the important human resource training places, serving many industries and fields of the whole country.
In 2024, Hue University will have 153 undergraduate training majors, 108 master's training majors, 58 doctoral training majors, 63 training majors for level I and II specialists; 12 training majors for resident doctors.
In 2024, Hue University was listed for the first time by US News & World Report as one of the world's leading higher education institutions.

According to Mr. Phuong, the next goal that the entire Hue University team is aiming for is to become the first national university in the Central region.
However, this process faces many difficulties, including the fact that the Government has not yet issued a Plan for the network of higher education institutions and teacher training institutions for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, making Hue University not have enough legal basis to implement the project to build a national university.
In addition, according to Mr. Phuong, due to its unique characteristics in the Central region, Hue University is a university training unit with low tuition fees compared to the two ends of the country.
Low tuition fees and limited tuition increases make it difficult for Hue University to reinvest in facilities and staff.
One of the reasons why Hue University has not been able to meet the criteria to become a national university as it is now is because the staff and lecturers themselves have not yet fully developed their internal strength.
“Infrastructure can be purchased but investing in human resources is very difficult. The story of brain drain at Hue University is still happening due to many different factors,” Mr. Phuong said.
Mr. Phuong recommended that the Government, central ministries, and Thua Thien Hue province promptly resolve the recommendations and obstacles of Hue University, so that the unit can soon realize its goal of becoming the first national university in the Central region.
Combining Hue University and Danang University?
Associate Professor Dr. Phan Thanh Binh (former Chairman of the National Assembly's Committee on Culture, Education, Youth, Adolescents and Children) said that currently in the Central region there are two regional universities with the potential to develop into national universities: Hue University and Da Nang University.
Regarding Hue University, Mr. Binh commented that the unit has advantages in terms of history, human resources, resources and many basic advantages to be able to develop into a national university.
"However, compared to necessary standards, requirements and national and local economic conditions, Hue still faces many challenges," Mr. Binh said.
According to Mr. Binh, one of the options for building the first national university in the Central region that can be considered is to combine Hue University and Da Nang University together.
However, this option needs to be carefully researched and in-depth surveyed.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Thua Thien Hue province, said that the province will always support, accompany and provide maximum assistance to Hue University to overcome difficulties in the process of building the unit to become the first national university in the Central region.
