Crystal Palace received sad news just one day after Oliver Glasner's team defeated Liverpool 4-2 on penalties to win the 2025 Community Shield.
Crystal Palace's appeal rejected
Today (August 11), Crystal Palace officially ended their hopes of participating in the 2025-2026 Europa League after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected the appeal, upholding UEFA's decision on July 12.
Previously, the Europa League ticket went to Crystal Palace when they defeated Man City 1-0 in the FA Cup final, a title that would have guaranteed a Europa League place. However, they were still relegated to the UEFA Conference League, with the replacement spot given to Nottingham Forest.
Just defeated Liverpool to win the English Super Cup, Crystal Palace received sad news again
Before this verdict, goalkeeper Dean Henderson spoke out: "We deserve to participate in the Europa League. This is a big shock to fans after more than 120 years of waiting."
The reason for this is a violation of the "multi-club ownership" rule. Eagle Football Holdings, chair John Textor, once owned 43% of Palace and controlled Lyon, who also qualified for the Europa League. By law, two clubs with the same owner cannot compete in the same European tournament.
Although Textor sold most of his Lyon stake before the March 1 deadline, UEFA concluded that he still had significant influence at the time of the data cut-off. They decided to award Lyon a preferential place thanks to their sixth-place finish in Ligue 1, ahead of Crystal Palace in 12th place in the Premier League.
Crystal Palace just lost money and is at risk of losing key players
The Premier League side argued that the rules were unfairly applied to them. However, CAS said the evidence from UEFA was convincing, the rules were clear and there were no exceptions for breaches. The result means Crystal Palace will play in the Conference League play-offs on 21 August against Fredrikstad (Norway) or Midtjylland (Denmark).
Not only losing about 20 million pounds in revenue, Crystal Palace also faces the risk of saying goodbye to two stars, center back Marc Guehi and striker Eberechi Eze, targets of interest to Liverpool and Arsenal.
