On the afternoon of May 3, Most Venerable Thich Tam Hai, Deputy Head of the Information and Communications Department of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, said that the heart relic of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc will be brought from its storage location at the State Bank of Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City to the Vietnam National Pagoda on 3/2 Street, District 10, for people to pay their respects and worship from 2:00 p.m. on May 6.
According to the Organizing Committee, by the afternoon of May 2, 1,088 delegations with nearly 50,000 people had registered to worship the heart relic of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc at Vietnam National Temple.
Previously, the invitation, veneration and worship of the heart relics of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc at Vietnam National Temple was postponed from the plan of May 3 due to "not enough conditions" according to the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha.
Heart relics of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc and Buddha relics (brought from India to Vietnam) are two treasures for people to worship in the 2025 Vesak festival program in Ho Chi Minh City. Up to now, the Buddha's relics have completed the decoration at Thanh Tam Pagoda located in the Buddhist Academy for people to visit and worship from 6:00 a.m. on May 3.
Venerable Thich Quang Duc, whose birth name was Lam Van Tuat, was born in 1897 in Van Ninh district, Khanh Hoa. On June 11, 1963, he doused himself in gasoline and set himself on fire at the intersection of Phan Dinh Phung Avenue and Le Van Duyet Street (now Nguyen Dinh Chieu - Cach Mang Thang Tam intersection) in Saigon, to protest the repression of Buddhism by the Ngo Dinh Diem government, witnessed by thousands of people and Buddhists. The monk's heart was returned to the crematorium for many hours but did not burn, becoming a solid block like stone with its shape intact.
The Venerables of the Inter-Sect Committee for the Protection of Buddhism decided to invite the immortal heart of Bodhisattva back to Xa Loi Pagoda for worship. Afterwards, the heart relic of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc was brought to Viet Nam Quoc Tu and then kept at the State Bank branch in Ho Chi Minh City.
