Although pig prices are increasing, farmers are still worried that other costs will increase when restocking. |
According to statistics from the city's livestock management industry, over the past month, the selling price of live pigs in Hue City has been from 80,000 to 85,000 VND/kg. This price is the highest in the past 5 years and is not only in Hue, but also recorded in the provinces and cities of the Central region and the whole country. The current high price of live pigs has made most pig farmers excited. Because according to calculations, compared to the cost of raising pigs, from the beginning of March 2025 until now, farmers have earned an additional profit of 15,000 - 20,000 VND/kg when selling pigs.
Currently, the average daily pork consumption in Hue City is about 60 tons (slaughtered meat), equivalent to 1,200 pigs. However, the pork supply in Hue City alone only meets about 75% of the demand. The reason for the shortage of pork supply in Hue, according to the representative of the local livestock management industry, is that most of the pork has been sold to serve the Lunar New Year 2025, so it has not been possible to restock. In addition, the African swine fever (ASF) situation is still complicated across the country, so many farms are still hesitant and have not restocked. Another reason is that because of the complicated developments of ASF, before the Lunar New Year 2025, some farms and households sold their pigs early, leading to a shortage in the current supply.
This reality requires the agricultural sector to have timely policies to create conditions for pig farmers to have appropriate herd restoration plans, proactively respond to epidemics to always ensure supply and meet market demand.
Currently, in Hue City, there are 4 large-scale pig farms and 6 medium-scale farms. Of which, the farm has at least more than 1,400 pigs and the large farm is raising more than 60,000 pigs. These farms have been and are re-raising pigs; some of them have re-raised pigs over 2 months old. In addition to the supply preparation of pig farms, business owners and slaughterhouses have also proactively imported pork from provinces such as Dong Nai, Binh Duong, and Quang Tri with a quantity of 200 - 500 pigs/day to ensure supply in the city. In addition, large and small supermarkets have proactively supplied enough pork, stabilizing prices for the current market.
In the long term, functional agencies, such as the agricultural sector, industry and trade, and localities need to closely monitor the supply and demand of pork to avoid local price fluctuations; at the same time, monitor the market for breeding animals and animal feed to have timely guidance measures, contributing to stabilizing inputs for farmers. In addition, farmers and distributors need to have agreements and commitments in supplying and regulating the appropriate supply as well as sales plans, joining hands with management agencies to share responsibility with consumers, not allowing pork prices to increase "hotly", affecting the State's macroeconomic control goals. Pork breeding, processing and trading facilities also need to organize careful herd restoration, not hoarding goods or inflating prices. Pork distribution and supply enterprises must ensure regular quality at local markets, shopping centers and supermarkets.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, Head of the City's Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, currently, ASF in the country is still complicated, so livestock farms need to regularly clean and ensure the safety of their farming areas, proactively prevent and control epidemics... This is also a factor that contributes to ensuring a stable supply of pork on the market.
