Technology is changing the way police monitor traffic. In Minnesota, a new camera system using artificial intelligence (AI) can detect drivers using their phones, not wearing seat belts, and other distracted driving behaviors in a split second.
According to the South Lake Minnetonka Police Department, the AI camera system detected up to 10,000 violations on Highway 7 in February alone. This number has officials sounding the alarm, many more drivers are distracted than initially thought.
According to the police, although 10,000 cases of distracted driving were detected, only about 300 drivers were fined. In the remaining cases, the police only issued warnings so that people can gradually get used to detecting this violation.
The technology used is the Acusensus infrared camera system, which consists of four cameras mounted along the highway. The device operates day and night and sends images of violations to police units ahead for processing.
In addition to fixed stations, camouflaged police cars with cameras on both sides have begun to be deployed to detect people engrossed in their phones behind the wheel.
Unlike conventional cameras that issue fines, AI does not automatically issue tickets, but acts as a remote "observation assistant" that automatically analyzes violations and issues warnings to drivers. After being warned by the police, the fine for distracted drivers starts at $100 for the first violation and can go up to $300 for repeat offenses.
Distracted driving, from texting, playing games to watching videos... is the leading cause of traffic accidents, especially in an era where smartphones, touch screens and integrated entertainment systems have become popular in cars.
In Minnesota, the law allows drivers to tap their phones to answer calls, but completely prohibits holding the device while driving. With the help of AI, “sneaking phone use” while driving is now almost impossible.
