Meningococcal meningitis is a dangerous disease that progresses rapidly and can cause death within 24 hours. So what are the symptoms and how to prevent it?

Below is general information about the disease and disease prevention measures recommended by the Ministry of Health .

1. What is meningococcal meningitis?

Meningococcal meningitis is an acute bacterial infection that occurs suddenly with symptoms of fever, severe headache, nausea and vomiting, stiff neck, often with a petechiae or possibly blisters. Patients are often lethargic or comatose. There are cases of sudden weakness, hemorrhagic plaques and shock.

Symptom:

Fever

Severe headache

Nausea and vomiting

Stiff neck

Starburst or vesicular purpura

Drowsiness or coma

2. Source of infection

- Reservoir: The reservoir of meningococcal bacteria in nature is humans. Therefore, the main source of infection is patients and healthy carriers.

- Incubation period: From 2-10 days, usually 3-4 days.

- Transmission period: Depends on the existence of meningococcal bacteria in the nose and throat of the infected person and the bacteria will disappear in the nose and throat after 24 hours of antibiotic treatment.

3. Transmission method

It is mainly transmitted by direct respiratory contact with droplets of saliva contaminated with meningococcal bacteria from an infected person to the nose and throat of a susceptible person. Transmission of the disease through objects is rare.

4. How to prevent meningococcal meningitis

- Practice good personal hygiene: wash hands regularly with soap, gargle with regular nasal and throat antiseptic solutions.

- Eat nutritious food, exercise, improve physical condition.

- Practice good hygiene and ventilation in your home and workplace.

- Actively vaccinate against diseases at medical facilities.

- When detecting signs of suspected illness, go to the doctor or immediately notify the nearest medical facility.
