Ministry of Health proposes to handle celebrities who advertise 'explosive' functional foods

The Food Safety Department has received reports that some celebrities are advertising food and functional foods in violation of advertising regulations.

On April 15, the Department of Food Safety (Ministry of Health) informed that it had sent a document to the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information; Department of Grassroots Culture regarding coordination in managing food advertising.

The Food Safety Department said it had received reports from the press that some celebrities and influencers on social networks were advertising foods and functional foods that showed signs of violating regulations on food advertising, especially misleading advertisements of products with medicinal uses, and misleading advertisements about product quality and uses.

In order for the law to be strictly enforced and to promptly prevent the over-advertising of food products, the Food Safety Department proposes to coordinate in checking information, handling illegal advertising acts of social networking sites and handling celebrities whose advertising violations have been reported and notify the results to the Food Safety Department for synthesis.

Previously, at the regular Government press conference in March 2025, Permanent Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Le Hai Binh provided information related to product advertising activities on social networks for celebrities, singers and artists.

According to Mr. Le Hai Binh, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism is currently amending the Law on Advertising, which is expected to add a number of specific provisions related to celebrities and artists participating in advertising, which stipulates that each person participating in online advertising must be responsible before the law in general and the Law on Advertising in particular regarding the products they advertise. Advertisers must be responsible for verifying transparently and specifically the products they have advertised./.
