Hue Central Hospital successfully performed 4 heart, liver, and cornea transplants across Vietnam

Professor Pham Nhu Hiep, Director of Hue Central Hospital, said that immediately after the organ source arrived in Hue, the transplant teams urgently performed surgeries at night to save the lives of patients in critical condition.

The heart was transplanted to a patient with end-stage dilated cardiomyopathy, very poorly responsive to medical treatment with very low left ventricular function LVEF 17-21%; the patient had suffered multiple life-threatening cardiac arrests.

The right liver was transplanted to a pediatric patient, born in 2009, with congenital biliary atresia, who underwent Kasai surgery at 2 months of age and was regularly monitored and treated at Hue Central Hospital, with secondary biliary cirrhosis with a MELD score >30, recurrent biliary tract infections 1-2 times/year, had to undergo 5 ligations of esophageal varices, and had a very fragile life.

After surgery, the two heart and liver transplant patients were transferred to the recovery room. By 9:00 p.m. on June 13, the two patients were fully conscious, hemodynamically stable, with hematological and biochemical tests within acceptable limits, and were taken off the ventilator at 9:00 p.m. on June 14.

Currently, after 6 days of surgery, the liver transplant patient has good graft function, has resumed eating and light movement. No abnormalities have been recorded in the clinical progression.

In addition, two patients with corneal dystrophy, one of whom had been living in complete darkness, received donated corneas. Each procedure lasted about an hour, with the surgeon removing the diseased cornea, replacing it with the donated cornea, and suturing it with small stitches. After surgery, vision gradually recovered, and the patients were monitored and regularly given anti-rejection medication.

Hue Central Hospital would like to express our sincere thanks to the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center, Thong Nhat Hospital (HCMC), 108 Military Central Hospital, Tan Son Nhat International Airport, Phu Bai International Airport, and the Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Police and Hue City Traffic Police. The urgent, dedicated and responsible coordination of your units has contributed to ensuring that the coordination and transportation of tissues and organs takes place safely, smoothly and promptly - so that each heartbeat can beat again, each life is revived in the overwhelming happiness of life being given and received.
