Ninh Binh has long been a famous tourist destination due to its amazing and beautiful landscape. However, not everyone knows that in Bai Dinh, Ninh Binh, there is a well that holds the record for the largest water well in Vietnam. That is Ngoc well.

Specifically, in December 2007, the Vietnam Record Book Center issued a certificate confirming the record of "The pagoda with the largest well in Vietnam" (Ngoc Well - Bai Dinh Pagoda).

Ngoc Well is located at the foot of the ancient Bai Dinh Pagoda (Gia Sinh Commune, Gia Vien District, Ninh Binh Province). The Ngoc Well is surrounded by limestone mountains and ancient trees, creating a natural landscape that is both poetic and majestic.

According to historical records, the well was built about 1,000 years ago. In the past, no one knew about this well. Zen master Nguyen Minh Khong (founder of Bai Dinh Pagoda) was told by a god in a dream that there was a precious water source at the foot of the mountain near the pagoda. After that, he used the well water to make medicine to treat people's illnesses.

Nowadays, when the ancient and new Bai Dinh pagodas were restored and built, the Ngoc well was also restored. The well is now crescent-shaped, nearly 30m in diameter, and about 6m deep. The well mouth is built around Dinh mountain stones.

The area around the well is built in a square shape with an area of up to 6,000m2, the four corners are 4 octagonal floors creating an ancient and solemn look.

The water source of Ngoc well is cool and clear, and never dries up, so it is often used for making medicine and daily activities. Up to now, Ninh Binh people still pay attention to preserving Ngoc well in the best conditions to preserve this relic for a long time.

Jade Well is also known as "God's Well" or "Dragon's Eye". These names are also associated with many unique legends here.

Although it has existed for thousands of years, it is said that until now, this well has never run out of water, even during the dry season, although it was originally just a small earthen well that was later expanded.

Many locals believe that the well has an abundant source of underground water that is connected to a mysterious underground river.

During the construction of the new Bai Dinh Pagoda – a pagoda with many records in Asia, Southeast Asia and Vietnam; hundreds of workers, engineers and laborers used well water for daily activities, cooking, bathing, mixing concrete… but the more water was used, the more the well filled up, never running out.

During the festival season, at Bai Dinh Pagoda in the beginning of the lunar year, thousands of people flock here to worship, visit the pagoda and go to Ngoc Well to ask for water to use to pray for peace and luck.
