The Smart Lions Problem

VnExpressVnExpress26/05/2023

Does the 6th grade math problem about lions trying to survive related to the induction method in Mathematics give you trouble?

Induction is a very important method in Mathematics. We apply this method through the following fun problem :

Twenty lions lived in a cage. Their favorite food was sheep. However, the lions knew that any lion that ate a sheep would become sleepy and risk being eaten by another lion nearby.

A lion that eats another lion will also get sleepy and run the risk of being eaten. A sheep is put in a cage. Each lion is eager to eat it, but will only do so if they are sure they will not be eaten. What will happen to the sheep?

Note that if a lamb is eaten, it will only be eaten by one lion, and not shared with the entire flock. The lions in the pen are all very intelligent and they always act in their own best interests.
