April 24 will mark the 10th anniversary of the first Apple Watch. However, the tech giant will not celebrate the occasion with much fanfare. Instead, Apple has decided to call April 24 Global Close Your Rings Day.
Activity Rings have been a core feature of the Apple Watch since the very beginning, helping users maintain a regular exercise routine. The feature includes three different colored rings, each representing an activity (move, exercise, and stand).
To complete the loop, users must meet personal daily goals such as burning calories, moving enough minutes, and standing for at least one minute. Goals can be adjusted based on the person's ability, or they can pause for a day if they need a break.
As the name suggests, on this day, all Apple Watch users are encouraged to close all three rings and share their achievements on social media with #CloseYourRings. Those who complete will receive an animated badge, along with 10 animated stickers exclusive to the Messages app.
Users who complete will also receive a limited-edition badge for the event, which will be available in Apple Stores worldwide on April 24.
If that wasn’t enough, Apple also released a study to back up its claim. The Apple Heart and Movement Study, which involved 140,000 people, found a positive correlation between completing activity rings and factors like sleep, heart health, and mental health.
Those who regularly completed activity rounds were 48% more likely to sleep better, 73% more likely to have a stable resting heart rate, and felt less stressed (a 57% reduction in stress). These associations were found equally in men and women, and across all ages.
The study was conducted in collaboration between Brigham and Women's Hospital, the American Heart Association, and Apple, with more than 200,000 people across the United States volunteering to participate.
