India has overtaken China as the top source of smartphones in the United States, after Apple Inc. shifted more iPhone assembly to the South Asian nation.

India led smartphone shipments to the US for the first time in Q2 2025, accounting for 44% of the market share, according to Canalys data.

Vietnam, home to much of Samsung Electronics Co.’s manufacturing, ranked second. China’s share fell to 25% from more than 60% a year ago.

Canalys researchers said the sharp shift came as Apple ramped up production in India and smartphone makers stocked up amid tariff concerns.

The number of iPhones produced in India more than tripled in the last quarter compared to the same period a year earlier. Shipments to the US fell 11%, due to unusually high shipments for stockpiling purposes at the beginning of the year.

Apple ramped up its stockpiling in late Q1 2025 and maintained it in Q2 2025, said Runar Bjorhovde, senior analyst at Canalys.

However, the market grew just 1%, showing sluggish demand amid growing economic pressures.

Apple and other manufacturers are moving production out of China, to countries like India and Vietnam to mitigate risks related to tariffs and geopolitical tensions.

This has drawn criticism from US President Donald Trump, who is pushing companies to move manufacturing to the US.

Apple still makes the majority of its iPhones in China and has no smartphone manufacturing operations in the US, despite pledging to hire more workers in the US and spending $500 billion domestically over the next four years./.
