The above information was shared by Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang, Principal of Marie Curie School at the Conference summarizing the 2022-2023 school year and deploying key tasks for the 2023-2024 school year organized by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training this morning (August 16).
The above data reported by Mr. Khang is part of the online English teaching project for 3rd grade students in Meo Vac district, Ha Giang province last school year.
Accordingly, at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, the whole country will implement the new general education program up to grade 3, requiring students to study 4 English periods/week.
Meo Vac district has 2,609 third grade students in 76 classes. Meanwhile, the district has only one English teacher - the "most chaotic situation in Ha Giang province". Therefore, the locality contacted Marie Curie school (Hanoi) with the hope of receiving support to teach English to third grade students.
Due to a severe shortage of English teachers, 2,609 third grade students in mountainous areas study this subject online.
" When I received the offer to help teach English, I was very hesitant, both wanting to do it and worried, " Mr. Khang recalled, adding that he couldn't sleep that night, tossing and turning for hours. The question "there are more than 2 weeks left until the school year starts, what should I do?" haunted his mind. However, in the end, the Principal gritted his teeth and decided to "do it, try my best."
On September 9, 2022, Marie Curie School conducted a trial lesson. Three days later, it officially launched online English teaching for 3rd grade students in Meo Vac district. 22 teachers from the capital taught 2,609 mountainous students, 90% of whom were Mong ethnic people.
According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, students will study 4 English periods/week. Each week, Meo Vac grade 3 students will study 3 English periods online with "quality" teachers from the capital. The remaining 1 period, students will be taught by local teachers. With 3 periods/week/class x 35 weeks of actual study x 76 classes, Marie Curie school has supported online teaching for all schools in Meo Vac district, which is 7,980 periods/school year.
Thanks to the systematic English learning, last school year, 4 primary school students in Meo Vac won prizes in the province's English competition. This is a luxury that teachers and students here have never dared to think of before.
Last May, English teachers from Marie Curie School traveled hundreds of kilometers to schools in the mountainous district of Meo Vac to meet the students they had taught for nearly a school year online.
Teachers also conduct an English speaking test after the first year of study, so that students can be exposed to and familiarized with this new subject. Each student will have 5 minutes to talk and answer questions in English. " After 1 year of implementation, that worry has been replaced by endless joy ," Mr. Khang said emotionally.
Not stopping at 1 year, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang also proposed to the leaders of Meo Vac district to let the teachers of Marie Curie school continue to teach this group of students for at least 1 more year. " This is a very special pedagogical situation for me personally during my 50 years of education" , Mr. Khang was moved.
He also shared that this is only a temporary solution. In the long term, Ha Giang province also needs to have a plan to train and recruit more teachers to ensure quality and implement a new general education program.
