Yen Bai preserves identity, creates the future

When the sunlight dyes each terraced field of Mu Cang Chai golden, when the sound of the Mong flute resonates in the clouds, when the Thai xoe dance bustles by the fire... that is when we feel most clearly - Yen Bai is not only beautiful because of its nature but also charming because of its rich and authentic cultural soul in every beat of life. From these values, Yen Bai is growing stronger and more courageous every day, affirming its own direction: "turning heritage into assets", making cultural identity a driving force for sustainable socio-economic development.

For a long time, Yen Bai has been likened to "the symphony of the Northwest mountains and forests" - where more than 30 ethnic groups live together, creating a colorful cultural picture. There, there are graceful Thai xoe dances that have been honored by UNESCO as a representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity. There are festivals imbued with spirituality, folk songs, the sound of the khen calling for a mate, traditional crafts... that have been preserved through many generations.
Every mountain, every stream, every village in Yen Bai contains a cultural story - an inexhaustible source, fueling the present and guiding the future. Not choosing to develop at all costs, Yen Bai has chosen its own path: rapid, sustainable development in the direction of "Green, Harmony, Identity and Happiness".
It is not only a slogan but has become a guiding principle throughout the province's planning until 2030, with a vision to 2050. The province advocates linking economic growth with cultural preservation, developing eco-tourism combined with relaxation and experiencing indigenous culture, thereby not only helping tourists "live slowly" but also creating livelihoods for the people, so that each person is a "cultural tour guide" where they live.
Yen Bai has established a model for sustainable tourism development, focusing on ethnic culture and natural resources. The province has built a tourism ecosystem based on ethnic minority culture and communities such as organizing festivals to honor the cultural identity of mountainous areas, promoting "Thai Xoe Art", developing resort services, mental health care combined with cultural experiences, typical cuisine...
Accordingly, based on the material from the resource values in the province, Yen Bai forms 4 key tourism spaces such as: Thac Ba Lake and Chay River; Yen Bai city and surrounding areas; Western Yen Bai province; Bac Tran Yen - Van Yen.
Along with that, there are 3 outstanding inter-regional tourism routes and 9 dynamic tourist areas that are being prioritized for development such as: Mu Cang Chai National Tourist Area, Suoi Giang Eco-Resort Area, Na Hau Nature Reserve... In particular, the province focuses on preserving and promoting the cultural values of ethnic groups associated with tourist areas such as: Mong ethnic culture associated with terraced fields in Mu Cang Chai district; Suoi Giang ancient Shan Tuyet tea area; Black Thai ethnic culture associated with "Thai Xoe Art" in Muong Lo, Nghia Lo; Red Dao ethnic culture associated with Van Yen cinnamon area; White pants Dao ethnic culture associated with the area around Thac Ba lake...
Ms. Luong Thi Xuyen - Vice Chairman of Mu Cang Chai District People's Committee said: "The close connection between preserving traditions and developing the economy is creating new momentum for the locality. We do not want to develop by trading identity. The goal is to make people love the place where they live more, be proud of their identity and that will keep tourists coming back."

In order to preserve and promote cultural values, Yen Bai has implemented many practical policies in recent times. One of the notable points in Yen Bai's cultural development strategy is to put people as the subject of cultural preservation and exploitation. Mass art troupes, clubs teaching xoè dance, khen playing, weaving, brocade embroidery, etc. have been supported to establish and maintain regular activities in villages and hamlets of community tourism.
The province has also proactively integrated resources from the national target program on socio-economic development of ethnic minority areas to support people in developing sustainable livelihoods from their own culture. In addition to preserving, people now have income from culture by opening homestays, selling traditional handicrafts and performing folk arts for tourists. Heritage is no longer "standing still in a glass cabinet" but has "come alive" in the daily lives of local people.
Ms. Vu Thi Mai Oanh - Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Yen Bai province affirmed: "To develop sustainable tourism, cultural factors are a prerequisite. Culture is not only the "soul" of tourism but also the mettle of the locality in integration. It is the difference in culture that will create a competitive advantage for Yen Bai tourism on the international map".
Promoting the value of cultural identity is not only preserving the past but also creating the future. With a strategic vision, synchronous policies and the participation of the entire political system, Yen Bai is gradually realizing the aspiration of becoming an attractive destination, a place where the cultural quintessence of ethnic groups converges with majestic nature. In the context of globalization and rapid development, preserving identity is a way for each land to assert itself. Yen Bai has been doing well in this role, turning cultural identity into an endogenous strength, becoming a solid lever for socio-economic development in a harmonious, sustainable and humane way.
