Consider supporting and not collecting tuition fees for students affected by storms and floods

On September 18, the Ministry of Education and Training issued an official dispatch to the People's Committees of provinces and cities regarding tuition support for students in areas affected by storms and floods.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training, the third storm (Yagi) and the floods after the storm have severely affected many provinces and cities. The Ministry of Education and Training requests the People's Committees of provinces and cities to continue to consider and decide on tuition support, free tuition for preschool children and primary school students, especially for students in areas affected by storms, floods and natural disasters, based on the level of damage to the people.

Previously, the Ministry of Education and Training requested that universities and pedagogical colleges pay attention to and prioritize allocating resources to exempt and reduce tuition fees and provide financial support suitable to the circumstances of each student affected by storm No. 3.

At the same time, instruct students to contact local authorities to request confirmation of family's sudden financial difficulties to apply for credit loans and support for studying.

According to the latest update from the Ministry of Education and Training, the total damage to facilities and teaching equipment is estimated at 1,260 billion VND, with 41,564 textbooks damaged.

Specifically, the damage to infrastructure is 514.7 billion VND. Of which, preschool education: 117.6 billion VND, primary education: 139.5 billion VND; secondary school: 142 billion VND; high school: 115.5 billion VND.

Damage to teaching equipment: 745.8 billion VND. Of which preschool education: 306.6 billion VND; primary education: 169.5 billion VND, secondary school: 156 billion VND; high school: 113.6 billion VND.

The damage to textbooks is 41,564 sets of books. Of which, primary education: 23,943 sets of books; middle school: 10,598 sets of books; high school: 7,023 sets of books.

Also according to the Ministry of Education and Training, reports from localities show that so far, 52 students and children have died, 3 students are missing, 8 students are injured; 3 teachers have died, 1 teacher is missing.

The Ministry of Education and Training has directed localities to continue to urgently focus on reviewing and assessing damage, synthesizing reports to propose competent authorities to support funding to overcome the consequences.
