On January 3, Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism released communication data between aircraft and air traffic control showing that a Japan Coast Guard aircraft was not allowed to move onto a runway at Haneda Airport before colliding with a Japan Airlines (JAL) commercial plane.

However, the Coast Guard plane's captain had previously told investigators that he had been given permission by air traffic control to fly the plane onto the runway. The captain survived the incident.

At a press conference on the evening of January 2, JAL officials said they had been informed that the airline's plane was "allowed to land."

According to Japanese police, the collision between the two planes occurred on the afternoon of January 2. All 379 passengers and crew on the JAL Airbus A350 were safely evacuated, and no one suffered life-threatening injuries after the plane caught fire.

However, five of the six crew members on the Japan Coast Guard plane were killed. The captain ejected from the plane and was seriously injured.
