VN-Index 'evaporates' 45 points after President Donald Trump imposes reciprocal tariffs

This morning (April 3), the stock market opened in red and the VN-Index evaporated 45 points after President Donald Trump imposed reciprocal tariffs on Vietnam.

The stock market on the morning of April 3 witnessed a surge in selling orders. After 15 minutes of opening the periodic order matching session, the VN-Index fell 3.4%, equivalent to a decrease of 45 points to 1,273 points. A series of stocks were sold heavily and fell to the floor price right from the beginning of the session with more than 40 stocks. In total, more than 355 stocks decreased in price while only 7 stocks increased in price.

Similarly on the Hanoi Stock Exchange, after only 5 minutes of trading, the HNX-Index fell nearly 4% to 228.9 points. The number of stocks that decreased in price was up to 134 while the group that went against the market increased in price was 6. No exception, the UPCoM-Index also fell more than 3.3% after only 10 minutes of trading.

Among the 30 blue-chip stocks in the VN30 basket of the HOSE, all banking stocks to consumer goods giants such as Vinamilk, Masan, Vietnam National Petroleum Group or the trio of Vingroup stocks... were all sold heavily, falling below the reference level.

On some forums, many stock investors expressed shock at the market's decline. "What the hell, how tragic", "Today, stock traders should not open their screens to look at the market"... are some of the conversations.

Early morning of April 3 (Vietnam time), President Donald Trump announced the list of countries subject to reciprocal tariffs. Of which, Vietnam is among the countries subject to the highest reciprocal tariffs of up to 46%. This rate shocked most businesses. Other economies in the region are also subject to tariffs such as: Cambodia at 49%, Thailand at 36%, Taiwan, Indonesia at 32%. China was previously taxed at 20%, now it is subject to an additional 34%, making it 54%. Canada and Mexico, the two largest trading partners of the US, have been subject to a 25% tariff on many goods and will not be subject to the new tariffs announced on April 2...
