Change level, change learning method

Before the opening ceremony of the new school year, schools in Hanoi organize welcoming ceremonies for new students, introducing homeroom teachers and the school so that students can get acquainted and feel a special welcome.

Nguyen Ngoc Thanh, a 6A0 student at Dong Da Secondary School (Hanoi) shared his feelings of excitement and sadness as he moved to a new school this year during the welcoming ceremony for 6th graders held on the afternoon of August 19.

“The spacious classroom, the rows of green trees and the warm smiles of the teachers on the first day made me feel less confused. I thought there would be many challenges in the new level of education, but I promised myself to try my best to study, practice hard, and have fun with my friends to have many beautiful memories in the upcoming school year,” Thanh said.

The students' faces were excited when they received new classes and new schools.

Ms. Dao Thi Hong Hanh, Principal of Dong Da Secondary School, said that the opening ceremony for the whole school with about 3,000 students will take place on the morning of September 5, joining the opening atmosphere of students nationwide. However, before that, the school will hold a special welcoming ceremony for more than 700 6th grade students so that they can get to know their teachers and school.

At the ceremony, students received greetings for the new school year from the principal, got to know their friends and homeroom teachers, and heard an introduction to the school's facilities. In particular, 6th grade students will write down their feelings and solemnly attach them to the class's "Emotional Station" as a memorable milestone starting at a new school, new grade, new teachers and friends.

When moving to a new level, 6th graders will have many new things, including studying. If in primary school, students study mainly with their homeroom teacher, in secondary school, each subject has a teacher, the learning method, testing, and evaluation with many points will also be different from the previous level.

Ms. Hanh told the students that during the 4 years of study, she hopes that they will consider the school as their home, the teachers as their parents, and their friends as their brothers and sisters. She hopes that the students will be self-aware and proactive in their studies and activities, and spread civilized and elegant actions. For the teachers, welcoming the 6th grade students will be the start of a new journey, and they need to be dedicated and devoted to imparting knowledge and accompanying and supporting the students.

After the welcoming ceremony for 6th graders, the school will organize a student orientation day, during which homeroom teachers will spend time instructing students in detail about wearing uniforms, the location of restrooms in the school, how to prepare books, how to take notes for each subject effectively, etc. Teachers are also ready to accompany and support students so that they can confidently overcome the transition period.

On the first day of school, 6th grade students of Dong Da Secondary School had the opportunity to interact and get to know outstanding students with good academic achievements.

Students quickly get to know and chat with each other.

Doan Gia Minh, a 10th grade IT student at Hanoi Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, told the 6th graders that when they go to middle school, the learning method is different from primary school, they will actively acquire knowledge from their teachers. To achieve good results, they need to have a learning strategy early on. When they don't understand the lesson, don't hesitate to raise your hand to ask for clarification.

“My secret to studying is to be comfortable making mistakes and then learn from them, gain experience, and improve your test-taking skills day by day. From the beginning, you should not put pressure on your grades and achievements,” said Gia Minh.

The new school year is about to begin, and teachers are reminding students to practice new habits such as: waking up earlier, reading books on their own, and sitting at their desks to study for 15-20 minutes to gradually get used to the study rhythm.

Attention to each student

Also on August 19, Giang Vo Secondary School held a ceremony to welcome 705 6th grade students back to school, receive their classes and get to know their teachers.

Ms. To Thi Hai Yen, the school's principal, told the students that under the guidance of teachers, with each passing day, she hopes that they will have more ability to cope with challenges in studying as well as in life, have the habit of expressing gratitude and spreading love, spreading positive thoughts and an optimistic attitude towards life.

For teachers, the principal suggested that at the beginning of the new school year, they should teach students with all their love and responsibility. In each lesson, in addition to imparting knowledge, teachers should pay attention to listening and observing each student. So that each student, in addition to being equipped with knowledge, is also trained in essential skills such as: understanding themselves, knowing how to control their emotions, knowing how to make responsible decisions, knowing how to build relationships and especially knowing how to empathize with others.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training , the opening ceremony will take place simultaneously with all schools nationwide on the morning of September 5. This year, schools that have their own activities will have to finish before 8am to broadcast the program celebrating the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Ministry of Education and Training and the opening ceremony of the new school year.
